Senior Product Manager, edX Commerce
2U, Crystal City, TX, United States
At 2U, we are all in on purpose. We are motivated by our mission – to make learning limitless – and connected by our shared passion to deliver world‑class higher education at scale. As the parent company of edX, a leading online learning platform, 2U powers thousands of higher education offerings – from free courses to full degrees. Together with our college, university, and corporate partners, we help accelerate careers and transform lives.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a Senior Product Manager to own the commerce capabilities roadmap for the edX Marketplace – a role at the direct intersection of product strategy, revenue growth, and platform modernization. The Senior Product Manager will guide the evolution of the commerce foundation as edX expands from a la carte course purchases into a subscription‑based learning platform, ensuring a seamless, scalable experience for learners.
Responsibilities
- Own the edX.org commerce capabilities product roadmap, from strategy through execution – including checkout, payment processing, billing, pricing, SKU management, and order management.
- Lead product efforts to support the launch and ongoing maturation of the edX consumer subscription offering, including subscription billing flows, upgrade/downgrade paths, and pricing tier management.
- Define and drive the product requirements to consolidate edX commerce onto a unified backend platform – enabling clean coexistence of subscription and a la carte purchasing models at scale.
- Develop and execute a sequenced roadmap of revenue‑driving commerce features, including dynamic pricing, multi‑currency and geopricing, financial assistance, promotional capabilities, bundling, abandoned cart recovery, omni‑channel purchasing, and in‑cart personalization.
- Partner with engineering leadership to manage the transition from the current commerce infrastructure to a modernized commerce backend, ensuring continuity of the learner purchase experience throughout.
- Define engineering backlog, technical requirements, and product features; lead cross‑functional teams of engineering, data science, UX, and finance to design and deliver solutions.
- Develop and manage commerce KPIs and revenue targets – including checkout conversion rate, cart abandonment rate, payment success rate, and revenue per visitor.
- Ensure commerce capabilities meet legal and compliance requirements across applicable markets, including payment regulations, VAT/taxation, and data privacy standards.
- Regularly measure and communicate impact and outcomes; adjust course based on data, experimentation, and market signals.
- Interact directly with learners, business stakeholders, and organizational leaders to understand emerging commerce needs and capture them in product memos, demos, and executive presentations.
- Represent your team with edX and 2U leadership and external stakeholders including payment platform vendors and partners.
- Use your own product – be an edX learner and purchaser – and develop deep empathy for the commerce experience.
Qualifications
- 5–8 years of product management experience, with demonstrated ownership of ecommerce or commerce platform capabilities at a consumer web or marketplace company.
- Experience with promotional mechanics, bundling strategies, and in‑cart personalization.
- Experience with A/B testing and experimentation in a commerce context.
- Experience with subscription commerce models – including billing infrastructure, pricing tiers, upgrade/downgrade flows, and subscription lifecycle management.
- Demonstrated track record of driving revenue outcomes through commerce product improvements.
- Experience navigating platform migrations or backend consolidation initiatives – you understand how to manage build decisions during a transition without creating technical debt.
- Strong understanding of payment processing, checkout optimization, and order management systems.
- Experience with global commerce capabilities – multi‑currency, geopricing, alternative payment methods, and localization.
- Structured and data‑driven thinking with a strong bias to action.
- Experience partnering effectively with engineering, UX, data science, finance, and legal teams to deliver on an outcome‑oriented commerce roadmap.
- Excellent communication and cross‑functional leadership skills.
- Outcome‑focused – you build roadmaps around outcomes, not solutions, and pivot quickly when something isn’t delivering value.
- Experience with agile software development.
Other Attributes That Will Help You In This Role
