About the Position
Director of the AI Security Initiative at the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC), a research hub at the University of California, Berkeley. The initiative focuses on AI risk management in the public interest, advancing research, policy guidance, and engagement with a broad range of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all programmatic and operational functions of the AI Security Initiative; ensure timely, high‑quality delivery of project and grant deliverables (25%).
- Maintain own research portfolio in AI security and risk management, including design, authorship of reports, op‑eds, peer‑reviewed publications and literature reviews (25%).
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, develop strategic financing plans, and steward relationships with funders and partners (20%).
- Perform supervisory functions: recruit and manage research fellows and graduate student researchers, lead team meetings, supervise research activities and report production (10%).
- Engage with external AI policy, standards, and governance bodies (NIST AI Consortium, ISO working groups), leading written feedback and providing technical recommendations (10%).
- Organize, host, and participate in conferences, workshops, and events; track current events and policy analysis (10%).
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a related field (public policy, computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, law, international security, political science) and/or equivalent experience.
- Expertise in AI policy, governance, and standards development, with deep knowledge of AI’s global security and governance implications.
- Program leadership experience in complex research, non‑profit, academic, or government settings; ability to lead diverse stakeholder groups toward a shared vision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to engage with diverse constituencies across multiple sectors.
- Experience designing and implementing qualitative research methods (interviews, literature reviews, case studies).
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills; ability to prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to represent the initiative at advisory boards, scientific communities, and external committees.
- Experience overseeing teams, mentoring colleagues, and/or directly managing staff or students.
- Independent work style and sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
- Highly skilled fundraising experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the AI Security Initiative’s mission, achievements, and infrastructure; strong awareness of current affairs in cybersecurity and AI security research, education, and policy.
Salary & Benefits
Compensation range: $130,000 – $170,000 yearly (FLSA exempt, 100% FTE, eligible for full benefits). The position is a career role with a comprehensive benefits package.
