Sr. Director, Operations and R&D Finance
10x Genomics, Pleasant Hill, CA, United States
Overview
At 10x Genomics, we are building the tools and services to master biology and advance human health. We are looking for world-class financial leadership to be the primary business partner and financial architect for our global Operations and R&D organizations. You will drive the financial strategy across the entire product lifecycle: allocation of investment for new products and services, guiding our sourcing and manufacturing scale-up, and continuously improving COGS for on-market products. This role manages $450M of annual spend spanning COGS, R&D, and capital expenditures. You will be deeply immersed in the business, spending time on the manufacturing floor and in the labs with business partners to ensure every dollar spent drives breakthrough innovation and sustaining cash flows.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Partnership: Serve as the primary financial partner to the President & Chief Scientific Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and Chief of Global Operations.
- Gross Margin: Own the end-to-end standard costing process and drive margin expansion through rigorous COGS and yield optimization across NPIs and on-market products. Bridge GAAP reporting (inventory reserves, warranty, absorption, etc.) with plain-English insights and actionable analytics.
- Operations & Supply Chain Planning: Lead production planning, capex forecasting, and global supply chain partnerships. Develop and improve core operational analytics to guide rapid, data-driven decisions.
- R&D Investment & LRP: Support pipeline investment decisions and Long-Range Planning (LRP) with robust financial frameworks. Evaluate platform-level ROI, capital allocation, and facilitate financial trade-off decisions from early-stage investment to commercial scale.
- Team Leadership: Build and develop a world-class FP&A team; elevate the function by recruiting top analytical talent.
- Operational Scaling: Design and implement lean workflows and automated systems across the company to ensure the organization can support rapid growth without linear headcount expansion.
To Be Successful, You Will Need
- 12 years of progressive finance experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Deep cost accounting expertise in a manufacturing environment producing physical products
- Experience managing $300M budgets spanning COGS, R&D, inventory, and capital expenditures across global sites.
- Strong command of US GAAP as it applies to manufacturing: standard costing, absorption, revenue recognition (ASC 606), inventory reserves, and warranty accounting.
- Proven team builder who has hired, developed, and retained high-caliber analytical talent.
- First-principles thinker who questions assumptions rather than defaulting to industry convention. Comfortable with ambiguity and able to structure problems from scratch.
- Exceptional communicator who can make complex financial and cost accounting concepts intuitive for non-financial audiences, including scientists, engineers, and executive leadership.
- Promote transparency and visibility: ensure data, goals, and rationale are clear and accessible to build trust and accountability across all functions.
- Expert-level financial modeling skills, including complex scenario and sensitivity analysis, and proficiency in building scalable models in Excel.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a quantitative field.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or graduate degree in a quantitative discipline. A background or genuine interest in life sciences.
- Experience with ERP systems (Oracle preferred) and fluency in how financial systems connect to manufacturing execution systems.
- Data analytics skills and experience (Tableau, Power Pivot, Power Query, SQL, R, Python, etc.).
Compensation
Base pay range for this full-time position: $265,600 — $359,400 USD. The actual base pay will depend on factors such as skills, qualifications, and experience.
