Overview
The Project Director is responsible for the end-to-end leadership and delivery of utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) EPC projects in Germany, from tender preparation and contract negotiation through execution, commissioning, and handover. This role holds full accountability for project profitability, schedule, quality, HSE, and client satisfaction, while coordinating cross-functional teams including engineering, procurement, construction, finance, and legal.
Education & Qualifications
Mandatory
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
Preferred
- Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent)
- Project Management certification (PMP, PRINCE2 or equivalent)
- MBA or postgraduate qualification in Project / Business Management
- Proficiency in German is highly advantageous.
Professional Experience
Mandatory
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience in EPC project management or project directorship
- Strong experience in tendering, contract negotiation, and EPC execution
- Demonstrated responsibility for budgeting, cash flow, and profitability
Highly Desirable
- Experience delivering projects in Germany or the EU
- Experience with BESS and Solar projects
- Familiarity with German permitting, grid connection, and contractual standards
- Experience working with international suppliers and subcontractors
- Solar PV and BESS EPC engineering fundamentals
- EPC contract structures (onshore/offshore, lump sum, turnkey)
- Performance warranties (PR, availability, production guarantees)
- Cost control, cash flow forecasting, and margin management
- Risk management and change order evaluation
- MS Project, MS Office (advanced Excel skills preferred)
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate tender preparation in line with company procedures
- Interface with Engineering, Procurement, Finance, and Legal teams
- Review tender requirements and identify deviations and commercial risks
- Decide on major equipment selection (modules, inverters, BESS, MV/HV)
- Coordinate performance warranty calculations (PR, availability, production)
- Evaluate RFQs and supplier proposals (technical and commercial)
- Review Heads of Terms and contribute to legal and commercial due diligence
- Define commercial terms including payment schedules, LDs, warranties, and timelines
- Prepare and approve: Project budgets and cost of sales
- Lead negotiations on: EPC contract structure and payment terms
- Performance guarantees and penalty regimes
- Contractual risk allocation
- Coordinate EPC contract preparation with internal departments
- Final approval and signature of EPC contracts
4. Procurement & Supply Chain
- Oversee RFQs and commercial term sheets for: PV modules, BESS systems, Subcontractors and civil works
4. Project Execution & Delivery
- Oversee project mobilisation prior to Notice to Proceed (NTP)
- Staffing and recruitment
- Consultants and external resources
- Provide executive oversight of: Project schedule and milestones
- Budget and cash flow
- Monitor project progress and address deviations proactively
- Review and approve change orders and claims (client and subcontractors)
- Maintain regular communication with clients to ensure satisfaction
- Ensure successful commissioning, handover, and contractual close-out
