Job Purpose

Assumes administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the provision of a program of activities designed to meet the interests and enhance the functional abilities and self‑esteem of each resident. Manages employees to provide Recreation Services according to the facility’s philosophy and collaborates with the Administrator to allocate resources efficiently, ensuring each resident achieves the highest practicable physical, mental and psycho‑social well‑being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather information to design recreational programs that meet the functional levels, needs and interests of each resident.
  • Develop and provide individual and group activities for residents that reflect resident interests, are scheduled at convenient times (morning, afternoon, evening, weekend), take place in a variety of locations and include special seasonal events. Provide monthly activity calendar to each resident.
  • Implement procedures to ensure residents are informed of upcoming activities.
  • Develop and update recreation services policies and procedures that reflect the facility’s philosophy and mission.
  • Participate in the development of the department budget and provide relevant financial information to the Administrator regarding department financial needs and status.
  • Hire, interview, retain qualified staff, conduct performance reviews, take appropriate job actions and review subordinates’ decisions to ensure staff meet qualification and performance standards and can perform all essential functions of the job.
  • Maintain current skills and knowledge through continuing education and apply that information to job responsibilities.
  • Participate in fire and disaster drills and, in the event of an emergency, carry out assigned duties to assure resident safety.
  • Plan and organize monthly activities: activity calendar, “News & Views” newsletter, entertainment schedule (piano, singing groups, musical entertainment), outings (museums, plays, luncheons, tours, shopping), and activity assistant planning calendar.
  • Daily: Encourage residents to participate in activities and perform resident check‑ins with phone calls.
  • Weekly: Schedule grocery shopping, regular shopping and banking trips, exercise program (three days a week), yoga class (one day a week), provide reminders of upcoming events, supervise strength training program as needed, and schedule librarian visits (two days a week).
  • Bi‑weekly: Organize Vesper services, movie nights with snacks, bingo with prizes, provide driver to Walmart, organize social hour for residents to socialize with snacks.
  • Supervise the activities assistant and the fitness instructor.
  • General: Plan and organize two overnight travel trips a year with a chartered bus, plan and organize the annual Spring Fling event, greet and integrate new residents when they move in, purchase supplies (bingo prizes, movie snacks, games, art supplies, books, decorations, etc.), and promote socialization events (yearly puzzle challenge, ice‑cream socials, birthday celebrations, Vesper services, Great Decisions class, presentations).
  • Act as librarian liaison between Whitaker Glen and the Wake County Library.

Minimum Education Requirements

Minimum two (2) years college education with courses in recreation, education, social work, other behavioral sciences or clinical services.

Minimum Experience Requirements

Two (2) years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, including at least one (1) year of full‑time employment in a resident activities program in a long‑term health‑care setting; or one (1) year of supervisory experience within a recreation program.

Licensure / Certification Required by Law

Eligible for certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or as an Activities Professional by a recognized accrediting body.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Qualified as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant, or hold satisfactory experience in related fields.
