Position Summary
The Assistant Director of System Engineering for the College of Engineering will be responsible for overseeing various core systems and research systems as the primary or secondary administrator for systems (see below for list of systems). This position will also serve as the primary storage administrator for these systems. This position supports the College of Engineering, which includes 3-4 schools within the College that are located in six locations across UGA main Athens campus.
This position will build and deploy computers for faculty and students, will ensure all research Linux computers meet USG/UGA security standards, will install software packages by request, and will build and maintain Linux system images for client deployment.
This position will supervise 2-3 full-time OIT staff positions and will manage the System Engineering side of the OIT office. This includes assigning help tickets, ensuring quality customer service to the college, conducting and overseeing weekly team meetings, and training, hiring, onboarding, and managing OIT System Engineering staff.
This position demands a professional, competent, and team-oriented individual capable of critical analysis and meeting challenging deadlines. This is a position of trust, often dealing with sensitive information, whereby all applicable University, State, and Federal practices, policies, and regulations must be adhered to without exception.
The core systems include:
- Citrix Provisioning Services, Netscaler, Virtual Applications and Desktops Administrator
- Network Administrator, which includes switches, firewalls, and IPSec/SSL VPNS
- Linux Server Administrator
- Microsoft Intune Administration
- Migration of On-Prem to Cloud Computer Migration
- Windows Server Administrator (including High-Availability Failover Hyper‑V Clusters)
- Compellent and Equallogic SAN Storage Administrator
Core Systems Engineering Administration (25%)
- Serve as the secondary Citrix Provisioning Services Administrator
- Serve as the secondary Citrix NetScaler Administrator
- Serve as the secondary Citrix Virtual Applications and Desktop Administrator
- Serve as the secondary Network Administrator which includes switches, firewalls and IPSec/SSL VPNS
- Serve as the primary Core Linux and Windows Server Administrator
- Serve as the primary Storage Administrator
Research Linux Systems Administrator (25%)
- Build and deploy new research Linux based computers for faculty and students.
- Ensure all research Linux computers meet USG/UGA Minimal Security Standards.
- Install new software packages requested by faculty and students on research Linux computers.
- Update and maintain research Linux computers.
- Build and maintain Linux system (Redhat & Ubuntu) images for client deployments.
Supervisory Duties (25%)
- This position will actively manage System Engineering Services Request Tracker IT queues

- Daily ticket review and work with appropriate staff as needed
- Ensure quality control
- This position will be responsible for conducting weekly team meetings for the Systems Engineering Team.
- This position is responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate completion of tasks for the Systems Engineering team.
- This position will serve as the supervisor of the Systems Engineering Team members.
- This position will recruit, hire, train, and retain top tier talent in the IT profession for the Systems Engineering Team, coordinating with the Office of Human Resources and the Senior Director of Information Technology when needed.
Client Services (10%)
- Prioritizing given requests, projects, and tasks along with documenting status of requests via RT ticketing system.
- Providing technical assistance to all users either in person or via a remote connection.
- Managing and resolving Tier 3 support requests.
Special Projects (10%)
- Special technology projects as assigned by the Sr. Director of OIT for the College of Engineering.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
- Duties that will contribute to the success of OIT operations within the College of Engineering.
- Attend CENGR staff meetings, complete UGA assigned employee trainings.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent and 8 years of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep knowledge and experience in core/system engineering services.
- Experience in supervising others.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies

- Ability to effectively lead and manage a technical professional staff.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.

- Strong knowledge of Apple Macintosh operating systems.
- Strong knowledge of Red Hat & Ubuntu Linux operating systems.
- Strong knowledge of Windows desktop operating systems.
- Strong knowledge of scripting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Skilled in partnering with Engineering faculty and their IT requirements.
- Working knowledge of cloud computing.
- Working knowledge of engineering applications.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Intune.
- Working knowledge of networking.
- Working knowledge of SAN Storage.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL and MySQL Databases.
Physical Demands
Light lifting not usually exceeding 25 pounds.
