This opportunity entails serving as the Group Director for Project Controls, Aviation, and Transit Services in the Carolinas, reporting directly to the Office Leader. This role is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and growth of these integrated service lines across the Carolinas.
The Group Director leads a multi‑disciplinary team in the planning, development, and delivery of complex programs and projects, ensuring quality work, on schedule, within budget, and to our client’s satisfaction. This role oversees financial adherence and key metrics across the group to ensure alignment with office and division goals.
In partnership with the Office Leader and Division leadership, the Group Director plays a key role in driving strategic growth, advancing client relationships, and leading major pursuits across aviation, transit, and project controls markets. The position ensures effective coordination of project priorities, staffing, and resource management across the Carolinas to deliver the right expertise at the right time.
This leader is also responsible for building and developing high‑performing teams while providing technical leadership, mentoring staff, and fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. The Group Director serves as a strategic advisor on complex programs and a liaison to HNTB’s national practices, helping bring best‑in‑class solutions to clients across the region.
What You’ll Do
- Direct and supervise the development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordinate with the office’s budget.
- Oversee group activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to projects; collaborate with other groups, offices, and divisions on work‑sharing needs and opportunities.
- Drive the implementation of the firm’s strategic plan and HNTB’s Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including developing strategic planning strategies.
- Drive the implementation of the firm’s contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.
- Drive the implementation of the firm’s project delivery (SDA) process including work planning, monthly project reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client’s satisfaction.
- Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win‑to‑work activities.
- Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction; lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for department growth.
- Assist in the development and execution of the office strategic plan; may participate in the Office Leadership Team (OLT).
- Recruit, hire, develop and retain department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with staff plans for reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.
- Manage assigned project management activities (scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and perform technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
- Lead a group, including the direct and indirect supervision of at least 25 but typically 35–40 or more employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience including 4 years of supervisory experience.

- Professional Engineer (PE) certification
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
