Sales Director

Myrias Optics, Amherst, MA, United States

Role Overview

Myrias Optics is commercializing a proprietary nanoimprint manufacturing platform that produces ultrathin, flat optical components — metalenses, diffractive optics, and waveguides — at the wafer level using a fully additive process purpose‑built for scalable manufacturing. By eliminating organic materials entirely, Myrias delivers superior thermal stability, long‑term reliability, and high optical performance across visible and infrared wavelengths in a form factor that conventional bulk glass optics cannot match. Three converging markets: AR/VR display optics (Asia OEM), defense/government imaging (US prime contractors), and datacenter photonics (AI infrastructure).

The Sales Director is a ground‑level sales hunter with a clear VP growth track — personally executing the commercial playbook: identifying and opening new accounts, driving pilots forward, and converting relationships into long‑term production agreements.

The right person for this role is currently a Senior BD Manager or Sales Manager who knows they can run faster and own more than their current role allows. You understand deep‑tech commercialization, you're comfortable being the only non‑PhD in the room, and you've spent enough time in Asia that you know the difference between a business dinner in Osaka and one in Taipei. You are a hunter and a driver — you source new accounts and you keep every deal moving. Your job is to execute with precision, demonstrate commercial instincts, and build the track record that earns you that seat.

Stage

Active global pilots converting to long‑term production — government programs and strategic partnerships underway

Travel

Taiwan, Japan, China — 6–10 international trips per year. Extended foundry visits required in Hsinchu/Taichung.

Reports To

CEO / Board

Team

Individual contributor. No direct reports — this is a hands‑on execution role.

Path

Director → VP at 12–18 months. Myrias is building two distinct commercial tracks — AR/VR consumer OEM (Asia) and Metaoptics/High‑Value Components (Consumer, Industrial, Datacenter). You lead the track best matched to your strengths.

Position Type

Full time, on‑site

Amherst, MA

What You Will Own

  • Account relationships — own the relationship with Myrias' top 25 strategic accounts; you are the consistent commercial face across every interaction
  • Deal execution — manage the full commercial lifecycle: first meeting → technical qualification → pilot proposal → contract negotiation → close
  • Asia Pacific partnerships — build and maintain hands‑on relationships with Taiwan foundry ecosystem, Japanese optical OEMs, and Chinese display manufacturers
  • Project management of active deals — track all open deal details, follow‑ups, technical review action items, and commercial milestones with discipline
  • CRM ownership — maintain HubSpot contact database, deal stages, and pipeline reporting; no ops support, you own this
  • Technical briefing preparation — work with the R&D team to prepare customer‑ready technical presentations, pilot proposals, and performance data packages
  • Conference and event coverage — represent Myrias at SPIE, Display Week, SEMICON Taiwan, and industry events; build pipeline from attendance

What We Are Looking For Non‑Negotiable

  • 5–10 years of B2B sales, business development, or strategic partnerships in photonics, optics, semiconductors, display technology, or AR/VR hardware
  • Proven hunter — personally opens new accounts; sources new opportunities without being given a list; asks themselves 'who should I be calling today' not 'who called me'
  • Driver — owns the follow‑up; does not let deals stall; if the last touch was more than two weeks ago, that's a failure; show us examples
  • Has personally closed or co‑led complex technology agreements — pilot contracts, JDAs, licensing deals, or supply agreements; not just supported someone else’s deal
  • Some Asia Pacific experience — has traveled and worked commercially in Taiwan, Japan, or China; is not intimidated by the region
  • Technical literacy — can follow a process integration discussion, understand yield and performance tradeoffs, and engage credibly with engineers
  • CRM discipline — owns the pipeline log; HubSpot is up to date, not something filled in retrospectively the night before a board meeting

Strong Advantage

  • Has managed a strategic relationship with a Tier‑1 tech company (Meta, Apple, Google, TSMC, Samsung, Foxconn, Sunny Optical) in any capacity
  • Photonics, waveguide, display, or optical coatings background — even as a technical contributor before moving to commercial
  • SBIR or government program exposure — signals readiness for the Metaoptics defense/gov track (DARPA, DIU, Air Force); a differentiator if this is the path you want
  • Startup experience — has worked at a technology company navigating from pilots to production; understands the pace
  • Awareness of US‑China technology landscape and ITAR/EAR basics — Myrias serves both Asia OEM markets and US defense customers; knowing which products can and cannot go to China is table stakes
  • Mandarin language skills (Taiwanese Mandarin or Mandarin) — a genuine differentiator for foundry partnerships and AR/VR OEM track

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation package, including equity
  • Full medical, vision, and dental plans
  • Company‑paid disability insurance
  • Paid vacation and sick time
  • Opportunity to play a foundational role in scaling a next‑generation wafer‑level optics platform
