Opportunity
We are seeking a Director, EHS Programs and Performance within our Utilities sector in the U.S. Reporting to the Sr. EHS Director, you will lead our EHS team across the U.S. for Utilities, working closely with operational and project leadership.
What You’ll Do Here
- Lead and align a team of Operational EHS direct reports to EHS’s strategic intent, focusing activities and holding each individual accountable for results.
- Work with Operations Leadership to ensure adequate EHS resources are in place as the business expands in the U.S.
- Drive consistent implementation of Aecon EHS strategy, vision, programs, policies and initiatives across the operational sector and projects.
- Monitor and report on EHS performance to operational leadership and inform corrective strategies.
- Maintain awareness of EHS‑related concerns or developments and provide pragmatic, timely solutions that impact business objectives.
- Contribute to and communicate a company‑wide long‑term vision and a strategy to achieve short, medium and long‑term goals.
- Ensure the Aecon EHS Program is successfully implemented on all U.S.‑based projects and work with senior management to continuously improve health and safety programs.
- Assist and support the development of site‑specific safety training and orientation for workers, supervisors, staff, subcontractors and clients.
- Ensure site‑specific EHS documentation and plans are in place before work commences, with risk and mitigation strategies defined.
- Liaise with external parties such as regulatory agencies, government inspectors, subcontractors, and the general public.
- Represent the Company at stakeholder meetings and other organizations on workplace health and safety matters.
- Develop and maintain a network of industry‑wide contacts.
- Mentor project leadership in conventional safety procedures.
- Conduct site walkdowns, audits and inspections to ensure key programs are implemented and controls are in place according to Aecon requirements and site‑specific EHS Management Plans.
- Lead major incident investigations.
- Develop and deliver presentations to management, workers, subcontractors and clients.
- Coach project management and field personnel on safety roles and compliance with safety standards.
- Support proposal development as required.
- Maintain and update EHS Program procedures as required.
What You Bring To The Team
- Minimum 5 years’ experience coordinating and managing health and safety for construction operations.
- Previous experience in a leadership role.
- Ability to oversee and lead multiple personnel over large geographic areas.
- Highly self‑motivated team player with a participative management style and strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to identify training gaps, generate effective solutions, and provide improvement recommendations.
- Adaptable and comfortable with change.
- Knowledge of construction projects and U.S. EHS legal requirements including OSHA regulations.
- Relevant post‑secondary education or equivalent experience in the environment, health and safety field.
- Data fluency (dashboards, trend analysis) and facilitation skills across crews, supervision, and management.
- Demonstrated ability to establish a rigorous EHS Program on new projects.
- Excellent knowledge of EHS Management Systems and their implementation.
- Understanding of OSHA 1904 recordkeeping, case management, workers’ compensation insurance requirements, and return‑to‑work programs.
- Strong communication skills – tact, diplomacy, verbal and written.
- Exceptional organizational and time‑management skills.
- Meeting and training facilitation expertise.
- Experience working in a unionized or non‑unionized environment.
- Incident investigation training or experience (asset).
- Willingness to travel extensively as required.
