Under the direction of the Executive Director of Operations and the Chief Nursing Officer , the Director of Labor & Delivery provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the inpatient Labor and Delivery units on the First Hill campus.

This role is accountable for delivering results aligned with the Quadruple Aim while advancing a patient-centered, high-reliability care model. The Director collaborates closely with campus and regional leadership, medical directors, and shared services to transform Labor & Delivery services, improve clinical outcomes, reduce care variation, and enhance care coordination across the continuum.

The Director serves as the focused clinical leader ensuring alignment with regional standards of care while driving operational excellence, fiscal responsibility, physician collaboration, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Clinical Excellence

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for Labor & Delivery services.
  • Ensure safe, evidence-based care delivery and adherence to clinical standards.
  • Promote a culture of quality, safety, and accountability.

Drive Operational Performance

  • Oversee staffing models, patient throughput, and care delivery systems.
  • Align staffing and operational resources with patient acuity and demand.
  • Improve efficiency in a dynamic, high-volume clinical environment.

Advance the Quadruple Aim

  • Develop performance metrics and maintain a balanced scorecard.
  • Improve quality outcomes, affordability, caregiver experience, and patient satisfaction.

Develop and Inspire Leaders

  • Coach and mentor nurse managers and frontline leaders.
  • Foster a collaborative environment focused on continuous improvement.

Strengthen Physician Partnerships

  • Collaborate with physician leaders to implement clinical best practices.
  • Enhance patient outcomes, physician engagement, and interdisciplinary teamwork.

Ensure Fiscal Stewardship

  • Lead departmental budget development and financial performance.
  • Monitor operational costs, reimbursement trends, and financial targets.

Champion Innovation and Transformation

  • Utilize technology, data analytics, and process improvement methodologies.
  • Drive modernization of care delivery and operational performance.

Team Structure

  • Approximately 140 direct reports, including:
    • Nurse Manager
    • Assistant Nurse Manager
    • Registered Nurses
    • Surgical Technologists
    • Health Unit Coordinators

Support structure includes

  • Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
  • Nurse Educator
  • Medical Director for Quality & Safety
  • Caregiver Resource Team
  • 24/7 Charge Nurse coverage

The department operates in a unionized environment with a recently ratified four-year labor agreement .

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master's Degree required
    • Nursing (MSN)
    • Healthcare Administration (MHA)
    • Business Administration (MBA)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required if Master's degree is not in Nursing.

Licensure

  • Active Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license (upon hire)
  • Nursing Leadership Certification required within 2 years of hire

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive healthcare leadership experience
  • Leadership experience within Labor & Delivery or Women's Services preferred
  • Experience managing complex hospital operations
  • Experience working in a unionized healthcare environment
  • Proven success driving clinical quality and operational improvements

Leadership Competencies

  • Strong financial and operational management skills
  • Expertise in budgeting, reimbursement, and cost management
  • Experience with data analytics, benchmarking, and performance dashboards
  • Proven ability to lead change using Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies
  • Excellent communication and physician partnership skills
  • Strong conflict resolution and stakeholder management abilities
  • Demonstrated servant leadership mindset
