Overview
College of the Holy Cross is a full-time position reporting to the Associate Director of Athletics - Sports Medicine. This role supports the day-to-day operations of athletic training services for student-athletes competing at the intercollegiate level across the College’s 27 varsity sports. The Athletic Trainer will provide care while adhering to College, conference, and NCAA regulations and uphold professional standards of practice. The candidate should communicate frequently and accurately with the Director of Athletics, coaches, student-athletes, parents, team physicians, Student Health Services, CAPS, and other departments on and off campus. The incumbent should demonstrate exemplary conduct, serve as a role model for student-athletes, and maintain a commitment to excellent customer service and ethical decision-making.
Job Description
- Provide the best possible medical care for student-athletes and visiting athletic teams.
- Perform injury evaluation, treatment, and first-aid care for assigned teams, events, and day-to-day on-call assignments.
- Plan and implement rehabilitation programs for serious injuries or post-surgical conditions.
- Maintain medical records for each athlete and oversee inventory of medical supplies and over-the-counter medications.
- Assist in supervising athletic training students in the training room and at practice or competition facilities.
- Communicate effectively with coaching staff, athletic administration, and sports medicine staff.
- Assist with established guidelines of healthcare and promote a communication network for student-athletes, parents, coaches, and medical personnel.
- Coordinate pre-participation physical examinations; manage timely referrals and communicate with Team Physicians regarding injuries and plans of care.
- Work with Athletic Training Education Program students to set up emergency and safety equipment; be familiar with the Departmental Emergency Plan and be prepared to initiate CPR/AED and on-field extrication when needed.
- Commit to ongoing professional development and stay up-to-date on current athletic training techniques.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree required
- Board of Certification credential required
- Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professionals licensure required
- CPR/AED/First Aid certifications; NPI number preferred or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
- Experience managing multiple tasks and working under pressure
- Experience with contact and collision sports (e.g., Football) and contact sports (e.g., Men’s Basketball)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines
- Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds; assist patients as needed; medium physical demand
- Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Applied Knowledge
- Knowledge of a wide range of medical problems; assessment and evaluation skills; ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals
Decision-Making Skills
- Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play decisions per state licensure guidelines

- Thorough and detailed injury tracking and documentation
Interpersonal Skills
- Effective communication in high-stress situations with patients, medical professionals, staff, and families
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision
- Highly motivated and capable of motivating others
- Mentor to student-athletes
Other Essential Duties
- Understand risk management and collaborate with Sports Medicine, Strengths & Conditioning to uphold health and safety standards
- Provide service-oriented, professional interactions with diverse constituencies

- Support department-wide collaboration and knowledge sharing
