Environmental Health and Safety Director/Department Head
The role of an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Director at Sabin Metal is a senior leadership role accountable for overseeing and managing Sabin Metals environmental health and safety programs. This role oversees all facets of environmental stewardship and occupational health and safety, including but not limited to industrial hygiene, hazardous material management, chemical and waste handling, process safety, emergency response, incident investigations and training programs.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Regulatory Compliance: Evaluate regulations from OSHA, EPA and State DEC regulations; ensure compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations; monitor changes in legislation and update policies accordingly.
- Program & Development: Estimate emissions; develop methods of estimating emissions for permit compliance; write, develop and implement programs related to OSHA, EPA and State DEC regulations; supervise EHS training programs.
- Reporting and Documentation: Monitor emissions; manage the program to document monthly emissions as per Sabin’s air permit application; report TRI, Tier II, Municipal Chemical Inventory Reports (209‑u), TSCA, CDR, Annual Odor Report; oversee exposure assessments for a variety of metals and chemicals, noise and other physical stressors and maintain the records for those measurements; maintain records of safety inspections, incidents and compliance audits; administer plantwide training for large generators; evaluate and classify wastes as per RCRA regulations; identify appropriate disposal vendors and set up accounts with them; manage the eManifest program.
- Collaboration and Communication: Identify and work with occupational medicine providers; write and communicate EHS information to managers, supervisors and department heads; work with various departments to promote a culture of safety; coordinate with HR to ensure the timely submission of OSHA 300 & 300A reporting; investigate accidents and incidents to determine root causes; develop strategies to prevent future occurrences; conduct risk assessments to identify potential work hazards; evaluate workplace conditions and recommend improvements.
Although its operations are quite extensive, it is a minor source under DEC air regulations. Monitoring efforts to support that position are a significant part of the Environmental Department’s responsibilities. Furthermore, very little production is automated – there is a significant amount of heavy work that is done manually at Sabin. Safety efforts are critical in maintaining the health of its employees. Many exposures to metals, inorganic and organic chemicals at this facility have been controlled to acceptable levels. However, surveillance over all kinds of exposures is ongoing and is expected to be continuous.

- Excellent computer skill (Microsoft Office tools including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook; adeptness in manufacturing and internet software is a plus)
Education and / or Experience Required
The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, engineering or related fields. The ideal candidate will have five or more years of experience related to Environmental Health and Safety.

Compensation
In compliance with NY State pay transparency requirements, the wage range for this position Fingerlakes Region NY is $75,000 – $125,000 annually. The rate range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Sabin Metal considers factors including, but not limited to education, experience and geographic location.
Travel
Although travel is infrequent, there may be opportunities to do temporary project work in the Williston, North Dakota and Cobalt, Ontario plant. Typically, that would require one week away from the Scottsville plant per event.
