
Planning and Inspections Director

Overview
The Town of Beaufort, NC — one of North Carolina’s most historic and picturesque waterfront communities — is seeking an experienced Planning & Inspections Director to lead planning, zoning, building inspections, and sustainable coastal development. Located along the Crystal Coast, Beaufort blends maritime heritage, coastal beauty, and a thriving waterfront economy. This leadership role offers the opportunity to guide thoughtful growth while preserving the historic charm and natural assets that make Beaufort a destination community.
Responsibilities
- Lead all planning and inspections operations including long-range planning, zoning, permitting, code enforcement, GIS, and sustainability initiatives
- Oversee development review, ordinance enforcement, and comprehensive plan and UDO updates
- Guide coastal resilience efforts including sea level rise, FEMA floodplain compliance, and CAMA regulations
- Collaborate with local, state, and federal partners on transportation, infrastructure, and environmental initiatives
- Support boards and commissions including Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and Historic Commission
- Manage departmental staff, budgets, and performance outcomes
- Serve as a key liaison with the community, developers, and elected officials
- Help shape the Town’s long-term vision for smart, sustainable coastal growth
- Help facilitate and assist with dredging efforts for the Town of Beaufort
- Ensure local, state, and national standards are met within the local historic district
Qualifications
- Strong expertise in urban/regional planning, zoning, and land use management
- Knowledge of North Carolina planning laws and coastal development issues
- Experience with FEMA, CAMA, sustainability, and floodplain management
- Proven leadership in managing teams, budgets, and complex projects
- Excellent communication and ability to build consensus among stakeholders
- A passion for community engagement and public service
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, or related field
- AICP certification (or ability to obtain within timeframe)
- Local government planning leadership experience
- NC Building Code Level III certification
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
