Director of Safety

We are seeking a compassionate, systems‑minded leader to serve as our next Director of Safety at Nebraska Medicine. This role focuses on understanding system drivers of harm, applying high‑reliability principles, and partnering across disciplines to create lasting safety improvements. Strong collaboration, influence, and the ability to foster a culture where every voice matters are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement safety strategies, policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with best practices in patient safety, employee safety, and infection prevention.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary safety and infection prevention team and collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to identify and address safety and quality issues.
  • Conduct root‑cause analyses and design and evaluate improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee the implementation of best practices to reduce hospital‑acquired infections and other infection prevention initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of safety among staff and patients and engage external healthcare peers and partners to share and learn best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in nursing, allied health, healthcare operations, or related healthcare fields.
  • Minimum of seven years of management experience.
  • Master’s degree or higher in a healthcare‑related field (Bachelor’s degree in a clinical or healthcare‑related field also acceptable).
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting root‑cause analysis and implementing improvement strategies.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement, outcomes monitoring, and/or process development.
  • Familiarity with operational healthcare/hospital/clinic workflows.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation abilities.
  • Proficiency with office computer tools (PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Visio, Word).
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or a valid compact state license or appropriate allied health license in Nebraska.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Professional in‑Patient Safety (CPPS).
  • Experience with regulatory and accreditation reporting, including on‑site visits and safety reviews.
  • Certification in Lean or Six Sigma.
  • Experience with Zero Harm principles.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.

Location: The director must live in Nebraska or Iowa and the position is a hybrid role that requires on‑campus presence.
