Research Program Director of Environmental Health and Safety

Nemours is seeking a Director of Environmental Health and Safety to join the Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, DE. The Director is responsible for the maintenance and implementation of safety policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local statutory requirements within the research department. The incumbent will develop safety training programs, including annual mandatory training assessments and new employee orientations, maintain chemical inventory lists and biohazardous tracking and disposal activities and records, serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer, and provide professional guidance, technical support, and development and implementation of safety and health procedures. This includes the Chemical Hygiene Plan for laboratory use of hazardous chemicals under OSHA regulations and development and implementation of institutional and laboratory/protocol-specific procedures and protocols, hazard assessments, and emergency response involving hazardous materials.

Essential Functions

  • Safety director for Nemours Biomedical Research Enterprise
  • Conducts periodic inspections of labs and work areas for safety and problematic issues; reports issues through institutional safety monitoring systems
  • Monitors and facilitates chemical inventories with each lab and schedules and ensures proper disposal with chemical disposal vendor
  • Works with Research Administration and Research Regulatory Affairs to develop, edit and provide guidance on safety protocols and standard operating procedures for research department
  • Serves on the Hospital Environment of Care Committee as the research member
  • Works with Research Administration and regulatory affairs to update and develop new policies in the Nemours Research Biosafety manual and Nemours Research Safety Manual
  • Serves as the primary contact for lab equipment repairs and installation of all lab equipment in RC I, Experimental Station and Administration Research Building labs and work areas; determines types of service and negotiates levels of service with vendors of research lab equipment; performs minor IT computer changes and set-up with Nemours IT
  • Liaison with all facilities to ensure safety protocols and best practices are followed
  • Serves as the Nemours Access control manager for E400 and Life Science Center for DuPont
  • Orders supplies and materials to support lab operations and safety requirements
  • Direct contact for site and Nemours
  • Communicates with site management and Nemours research teams to discuss facility issues, requests work orders and monitors service
  • Direct contact for DuPont site security; conducts required associate safety drills in connection with Nemours Security and Experimental Station Security
  • Knowledge of hospital and facility operations
  • Provides training on safe practices for handling biohazardous materials

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Training in lab safety and environmental safety procedures and regulations
  • Certifications such as lab safety, environment of care safety, OSHA, or radiation safety preferred
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience required
