Summary
The Director of Children & Family Ministry is a full-time position working alongside the Children and Family Ministries Team to facilitate all aspects of faith formation for children and families (birth through 5th grade).
The Director must possess a strong and active personal faith, demonstrate a clear calling to children’s ministry, be energized by building a healthy volunteer culture, and be passionate about supporting parents in nurturing their children’s faith.
The Director of Children & Family Ministry reports to the Associate Pastor and supervises the Childcare staff and volunteers.
Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities
- Lead the Children & Family Ministries Team consisting of key leaders and collaborators for ministry from birth through 5th grade.
- Manage schedules, events, physical resources, budgeting, communications, and use of ministry spaces.
- Oversee volunteers, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and ongoing support.
- Manage and ensure compliance with Safe Sanctuary policies by researching and updating practices annually, training staff and volunteers, and partnering with ministry leaders.
- Supervise the childcare staff, and volunteers.
- Participate as an active leader in the life of the church, including staff leadership meetings, Church Council, and other leadership gatherings as requested.
Vision & Creative Programming
- Provide operational oversight and creative planning for children’s ministry aligned with the church’s vision, values, and goals.
- Develop an innovative and adaptable annual calendar of faith‑strengthening experiences beyond weekly programming, including events such as family camp, retreats, mission opportunities, and intergenerational experiences.
Building Relationships & Bridges
- Build meaningful relationships with children and families within and beyond the congregation.
- Mentor children in developing their spiritual lives and leadership skills.
- Identify, recruit, train, and nurture volunteers, offering both behind‑the‑scenes and direct‑engagement roles.
- Create clear pathways for families to engage in the broader life of the church and actively invite participation.
- Enhance and expand opportunities for intergenerational ministry.
- Actively welcome and engage newcomers both online and in person.
- Participate in the church’s mission and social justice initiatives, helping children and families live out Christian compassion and service.
Qualifications
- Strong and active personal Christian faith.
- Demonstrated passion for creating vibrant ministry for children and families.
- Ability to build and sustain a healthy, joyful volunteer culture.
- Strong communication skills, particularly in sharing the Christian faith.
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent education and ministry experience.
- Previous experience in children’s ministry, teaching, or church leadership strongly desired.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including Sundays, major liturgical holidays, evenings, and occasional retreats or mission trips.
- Commitment to complying with all Community First UMC personnel policies and Safe Sanctuary requirements.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
