Overview The Mechanical Designer creates and develops detailed 3D models in Solidworks with a primary focus on the design and development of chassis systems and components, including chassis cabs. This role collaborates closely with Electrical Designers and the shop floor to verify fit and function, ensuring that designs are accurately translated into high‑quality physical builds.

Responsibilities

Design and develop detailed 3D models of chassis systems and components, including chassis cabs, using Solidworks.

Apply mechanical design principles, including GD&T, to ensure accurate dimensions, tolerances, and functional performance.

Collaborate with Electrical Designers to coordinate mechanical and electrical interfaces and ensure seamless integration of systems.

Work closely with shop floor personnel to verify fit, form, and function of designed components during build and assembly.

Review and troubleshoot designs based on feedback from manufacturing and testing, making necessary design adjustments.

Support the creation and maintenance of design documentation, including models, drawings, and related engineering data.

Contribute to the development and refinement of chassis designs for heavy truck and emergency response applications.

Participate in design reviews with other mechanical and electrical designers and functional leads to ensure design quality and consistency.

Interact with mentors and functional leads to align workload, follow established design standards, and continuously improve design practices.

Assisting with or support the creation of bills of material (BOM) and interpretation of air and hydraulic schematics for integration into designs, where applicable.

Essential Skills

Expertise in Solidworks 3D modeling for mechanical design.

Proficiency in sheet metal design and fabrication‑oriented modeling.

Working knowledge of GD&T.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience creating and managing bills of material (BOM).

Experience working with air and hydraulic schematics in the context of mechanical design.

Experience in heavy truck or transportation chassis design.

CSWP (Certified Solidworks Professional).

Work Environment This is a contract position based in an engineering building dedicated to the design and development of custom fire apparatus, heavy truck chassis, custom vehicles, and truck bodies. You will work primarily at a cubicle performing design work in Solidworks, surrounded by a team of approximately 12 designers, including both mechanical and electrical specialists.

The standard schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some periods of required overtime on Fridays, compensated at 1.5× the regular pay rate. The assignment offers one week of vacation every six months, along with six major holidays, and the contract is currently extended through the end of the year with potential continuation as part of a longer‑term project phase.

Pay & Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
