Primary Purpose Direct and manage the overall program of vocal music for the assigned campus. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular choir activities and ensure compliance with all state, UIL, Texas Music Educators Association, and district requirements. Plan and administer choir activities in accordance with campus and district expectations and prepare students to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in Music from an accredited college or university.
Valid Texas teaching certificate.
Valid music certification.
Current first aid, CPR, and AED certificate.
ESL certification preferred or required within two years of employment for teachers hired in the 2010-11 school year.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and overall operation of a vocal music program.
Knowledge of state, UIL, and Texas Music Educators Association policies governing choir activities.
Able to manage budget, personnel, and student behavior.
Able to instruct students and interpret policy, procedures, and data.
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year of teaching and choir directing experience, preferred.
Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Strategies
Engage and plan with high school choir directors to align program curricular and extracurricular activities with “feeder” high school programs.
Direct middle school vocal performers, including beginning classes, all large choir ensembles, soloists, and small ensembles.
Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in choir.
Provide participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, community events, and at all UIL and TMEA activities.
Use evaluative findings and student achievement data to assess program effectiveness.
Recommend policies to improve the program.
Maintain inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all choir equipment and performance apparel.
Develop and implement plans for the choral music program and provide written evidence of preparation.
Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect learners’ styles and needs.
Accompany and supervise on all out-of-town trips.
Actively participate in District choral music events.
Coordinate an extracurricular program of instruction for students to participate in District, Region, Area, and All-State TMEA events.
Student Growth and Development
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Be a positive role model and support the mission of the school district.
Collaborate with intermediate choir directors to ensure recruitment/retention activities foster increased program enrollment.
Classroom Management and Organization
Create an environment conducive to learning suitable for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook, and choir handbook.
Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips and arrange transportation, lodging, and meals.
Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
Maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Provide campus, district, and community awareness of choir activities and performances.
Budget and Inventory
Support choir booster club activities.
Develop and administer budget based on documented program needs and ensure operations are cost effective.
Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
Maintain current inventory of fixed assets related to the program.
Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all instruments and equipment.
Policy, Reports and Law
Adhere to district employee/department/campus handbooks, board policies, AISD procedures, Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics, and all applicable laws.
Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, TMEA rules, and local school board policy in the choir area.
Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents.
Professional Growth and Development
Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Attend fall and spring Region meetings.
Personnel Management
Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within the choir program.
Provide supervisory leadership and guidance for “feeder” intermediate school choir programs.
Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant choir directors.
Other
Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence.
Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities Monitor the performance of all booster club/parent volunteer activities, if applicable.
Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policies on teacher evaluation, the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS), and the extracurricular assignment evaluation.

$66,500 per year
Contract:
Probationary for 187 days plus 4 days of Alief U professional development for a teacher new to the district.
