BASIC FUNCTION (BF1):
The Director of Academic Services shall provide leadership for all academic areas within the school district to ensure all students are successful. This includes curriculum, instruction, and assessment; special education programming and support; Title, English Language Learner (ELL), Home School Assistance (HSAP), At-Risk and Talented and Gifted programs; professional development, and the Teacher Leader and Compensation System (TLC). In addition, the director will lead efforts for the provision of high-quality academic services and support through data analysis, implementation, and evaluation. This position may be shared with other districts.

In collaboration with the superintendent and senior leadership team, provides innovation and strategic direction for all areas related to academics
Supervises and leads, either directly or through delegation, all aspects of academic service and support
Provides strategic framework for all curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Organizational expert and primary resource for theory, research, and results‑proven practices relative to teaching and learning
Responsible for building educators' ability to use data to inform, implement, monitor, and evaluate results‑based decisions
Conduct classroom observations to ascertain the current state of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student engagement
Responsible for monitoring practices and procedures to ensure alignment of building initiatives with district goals
Collaborate with building principals to plan, implement, and evaluate needs‑based professional learning for staff
Responsible for fostering a healthy culture relative to teaching and learning that ensures success for all students
Ensures healthy, two‑way communication within and between stakeholder groups relative to school improvement efforts and student achievement
Provide ongoing updates regarding student achievement and program implementation to the Board of Directors
Consults with building principals and staff regarding the use of student achievement and program evaluation data
Assist with selection of, and budgeting for, academic equipment, materials, and supplies
Lead, in collaboration with building principals, the implementation of the district's TLC plan
Provides leadership, counsel, and coaching on the implications of change and innovation to staff
Responsible for the effective implementation of all district programs, including special education, Title, ELL, HSAP, At‑Risk, and Talented and Gifted
Maintains satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees
Collaborates with district leaders on the execution of the strategic plan, including goals, objectives, and communications
Attend networking meetings, conferences, and site visits as necessary to keep informed of the latest relevant trends and best‑practice strategies
Ensure the academic interests of the school district are represented at the local, state, and national levels
Serve as a Chief Advisor to the Superintendent and senior leadership relative to academic services
Represent Charles City Community Schools effectively in the community, state, and nation
Perform other duties as may be assigned
Abilities (A1) This position will require physical demands that include constant sitting, standing, walking, manual dexterity, reaching/pushing/pulling, lifting up to 25 pounds, carrying 35 feet, working inside, and extremes in temperature/humidity. There will be frequent climbing/stairs, bending/stooping, and driving. There will be occasional reaching/pushing/pulling.
Knowledge and Education (KE1-3 and KED1-3) Required:
Master's Degree in curriculum and instruction or educational administration
Iowa Administrative Certification with evaluator approval
Demonstrated successful experience as a classroom teacher (at least 3 years)
Desired:
Specialist or Doctorate Degree
Knowledge and experience in leading transformational change
Demonstrated and successful experience in school administration and/or educational leadership
