Overview
TRIO SSSP Retention Specialist – 75% limited appointment with a hybrid schedule (on‑campus and remote work possible). Location: La Jolla, UC San Diego – 9500 Gilman Drive, San Diego, CA 92037, United States. Responsibilities
Provide programmatic support in the administration and delivery of services designed to increase retention and graduate school admission rates for TRIO SSSP participants. Coordinate and support design, delivery, advising, counseling, and administration of skill development and academic support services through workshops, seminars, and tutoring. Develop and prepare materials for training, meetings, events, and outreach, including programs and presentations for campus partners and the community. Serve as a primary point of contact for TRIO SSSS students, build supportive relationships, and connect students to campus resources (academic advising, counseling, financial aid, student management, tutoring). Collaborate with the TRIO SSS Director and campus partners to develop comprehensive academic intervention strategies for students currently enrolled, no longer enrolled, or on academic notice or dismissal. Work with the Academic Success and Retention Manager to identify and implement support strategies for students facing academic challenges; review cohort data to identify trends and develop intrusive outreach strategies. Work with colleges and Deans of Academic Advising to provide academic counseling and guidance on university policies, procedures, and graduation requirements; focus on problem-solving to support retention and degree completion. Assist in the application review of incoming TRIO SSS participants; support recruitment, training, and supervision of student staff; engage in TRIO SSS marketing and outreach; establish and maintain liaisons with campus resource centers and academic departments; participate in committees and special projects as assigned. Qualifications
Graduation from college with major coursework in Sociology, Education, Ethnic Studies, or a related field. Knowledge of counseling theories and practices, learning, human and career development. Knowledge of personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self‑appraisal, self‑esteem, values, career choices, and leadership. Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating educational, cultural, and social programs in a higher education environment serving a diverse student population. Knowledge of methodologies to enhance student achievement and theories of higher education and student development; ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures. Understanding of trends and issues facing low‑income, first‑generation, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and underprepared students in higher education. Proven skill in designing, planning, and implementing academic support programs for first‑generation, low‑income, multicultural, and other non‑traditional students. Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, develop and administer programs, and use data for program effectiveness and assessment. Strong organizational skills, ability to multi‑task, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast‑paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, databases, and related tools. Knowledge of OASIS programs and services; familiarity with UCSD administrative structure, policies, and campus departments.
