Purpose The objective of this position is to ensure that the U.S. operations of The Bank of Nova Scotia have appropriate governance to effectively challenge operational and data management and governance activities that align with the Enterprise Framework and meet local supervisory expectations.
Own and implement SBUS’ operational and data risk management framework.
Effectively challenge the businesses, finance, operational, data risk management, statutory, and tax reporting coverage, providing senior management with an independent assessment of operational and data risk profiles.
Identify new and emerging operational risk themes based on internal and external data.
The incumbent, acting as the second line function, will challenge the effectiveness of the design of first line operated controls and monitoring methods, identify control deficiencies, and assist the Office of the U.S. Chief Data Officer and other owners with developing corrective action plans.
In addition, the Director will lead the evolution of the operational and data risk framework as part of Scotiabank U.S.’s broader efforts to enhance risk management capabilities.
What You'll Do
Maintain and enhance SBUS’s operational and data risk management framework, supporting standards and procedures covering identification, measurement, monitoring, and management of operational risk.
Execute day‑to‑day responsibilities of the operational and data risk team, including internal operational risk reports, RCSAs, and scenario analyses.
Effectively challenge businesses’ operational and data risk oversight activities.
Partner with the U.S. Enterprise Risk team and the Global Operational and Data Risk Team to align U.S. operational and data risk with global standards.
Lead training and communications to enhance the profile of operational risk within SBUS.
Support timely and accurate escalation of review findings and facilitate remediation analysis.
Align operational and data risk activities as required.
What You'll Bring
Strong understanding of the U.S. financial services regulatory landscape, statutory and tax reporting related to operational and data risk.
Strong cross‑functional and product understanding of Global Banking and Markets.
Experience leading dynamic, multifaceted projects.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, with ability to partner across functional and divisional lines.
Working knowledge of statutory and tax reporting.
Education
Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent required.
Advanced degree preferred.
Experience
Minimum 15 years at a financial institution, with at least 10 years in Operational Risk Management, Compliance, Risk Management or Audit.
Experience with Risk Identification and Assessment and/or RCSA process required.
Deep understanding of regulatory expectations for U.S. Operational Risk Management.
Hands‑on experience developing and producing management reports.
Capabilities
Strong interpersonal and presentation skills with multiple stakeholders.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to operate strategically, solve problems, multitask, and manage changing priorities.
