Job Summary The Produce Manager is responsible for leading all produce department operations, including merchandising, freshness, inventory control, food safety, and team performance. This role ensures high‑quality, fresh products, strong in‑stock conditions, and an exceptional customer experience while driving sales, managing shrink, and developing associates.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development

Lead, coach, and develop produce supervisors and associates.

Set clear expectations for freshness, quality, food safety, and customer service.

Support hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance management.

Foster a positive, inclusive, and safety‑focused work environment.

Support associate development and succession planning within the department.

Operations & Freshness Management

Oversee daily produce department operations, including receiving, stocking, rotation, and culling.

Ensure proper handling, storage, and rotation to maintain product freshness and quality.

Maintain clean, organized, and appealing produce displays.

Ensure consistent execution of department standards and operating procedures.

Merchandising & Sales

Execute merchandising plans, planograms, pricing, and signage accurately.

Drive sales through attractive displays, seasonal items, and promotional execution.

Ensure produce tables and displays are fully stocked and visually appealing.

Support seasonal transitions and promotional programs.

Food Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.

Enforce proper temperature control, cleaning, and handling procedures.

Ensure all associates are trained on food safety and hygiene standards.

Partner with store leadership during audits and inspections.

Inventory & Financial Performance

Manage ordering, receiving, and inventory control processes.

Monitor shrink, spoilage, and damages; implement corrective action as needed.

Manage labor usage and productivity to meet department goals.

Review department performance reports and take action to improve results.

Customer Experience

Promote a customer‑first culture through service excellence.

Address customer questions and concerns promptly and professionally.

Ensure consistent execution of service, quality, and cleanliness standards.

Collaboration & Communication

Partner closely with the Store Director, Assistant Store Director, and other department managers.

Coordinate with Grocery and Home Shopping teams to support order fulfillment and substitutions.

Communicate priorities, expectations, and operational updates clearly to the team.

Support store‑wide initiatives and operational changes.

Qualifications

Prior experience in produce, fresh foods, or retail department management.

Knowledge of produce handling, ripening, rotation, and food safety standards.

Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage daily operations.

Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Familiarity with inventory systems, ordering processes, and department reporting.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.

Ability to lift, push, pull, and move produce and supplies up to company‑defined weight limits.

Ability to work in varied temperatures, including coolers and sales floor environments.
