DOWL is a consulting firm with over 60 years of experience in civil engineering. The Transportation Designer 1 position performs entry‑level engineering calculations, design, and drafting for transportation projects such as sidewalks, bike paths, local roadways, intersections, highways, and freeways.
The role includes assisting with site visits, CAD drafting, geometric roadway layout and design, 3D modeling, writing project specifications and technical reports, calculating construction quantities, estimating construction costs, and project correspondence. The designer works under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer and seeks guidance from more experienced staff as needed.
Job Responsibilities and Duties Perform engineering calculations and drafting for transportation projects. Draft routes and alignments for roads and highways. Produce technical reports, memos, designs, and construction plans under supervision. Assist with specifications, cost estimates, and quantity calculations. Coordinate with project team members and maintain clear internal communications.
Software Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) – Basic AutoCAD, C3D – Basic
Technical Expertise Basic understanding of technical fundamentals. Performs basic technical tasks with oversight. Motivated to learn new technical skills through self‑study and mentoring. Basic technical writing skills and clear internal communications.
Teamwork Team player who collaborates, listens, takes direction, and retains information. Motivated to grow skills and help the team.
Project Delivery Technical reports and memos Specifications Construction quantity calculations and cost estimates Design documents and construction plans Exhibits
Understanding Budget and Schedule Basic understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets. Collaborates with supervisor to plan work time and monitor budget and schedule for simple tasks.
Client Interaction Infrequent direct client interaction. Reads emails, occasionally attends client meetings, listens, and prepares meeting minutes.
Other Duties Other duties as assigned.
Level of Work/Accountability Performs basic technical work in support of more experienced staff. Operates under close supervision.

Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree required. No prior experience required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations EIT/EI required within 6 months of hire. Valid driver’s license required.
Physical Demands Employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Must adjust focus and may require close vision.
