Job Summary The Baltimore City Office of Information and Technology (BCIT) is seeking a Marketing and Communications Intern to support outreach, public engagement, and digital communications. This role offers hands‑on experience contributing to citywide initiatives that help Baltimore residents access technology, city services, and digital resources.
The intern will support content creation, social media, events, and communications planning, with a focus on advancing the City’s broadband and digital equity goals. This position is ideal for someone who is creative, organized, and interested in using communications to support public service and community impact.
Essential Functions
Draft and edit content for social media, website, email, and print materials.
Support planning and promotion of events and community outreach efforts.
Assist with developing marketing campaigns and communications plans.
Help track and report on social media and digital engagement metrics.
Conduct basic research on audience trends, best practices, and outreach strategies.
Support internal communications and presentation development.
Assist with updating and maintaining content across platforms.
Perform other communications‑related tasks as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Current high school junior or senior, or enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
Basic experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation.
Experience with tools like Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva or similar design platforms preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Eligibility Requirements
Currently attend a Maryland high school as a junior/senior.
Currently attend a Maryland higher education institution.
Graduated from a Maryland high school, but currently attend a non‑Maryland higher education institution.
Graduated from a Maryland high school, and is currently enrolled or graduated from a career technical training program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail.
Ability to communicate clearly with a general audience.
Creative thinking and willingness to try new ideas.
Basic understanding of social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Interest in marketing, communications, public service, or civic engagement.
Background Check Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint. Must be successfully completed.
Probation All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six‑month probation.
