Job Summary
A Project Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Superintendent manages our mechanical-focused construction team, overseeing all aspects of installation on commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. This position is responsible for managing field operations, supervising crews, enforcing safety standards, and ensuring quality and code compliance throughout each phase of the project. The ideal candidate will have proven experience and proficiency across all divisions of work within the mechanical scope, including: some plumbing, HVAC, Duct, Millwright, Rigging, Sheet Metal, Pipe Fitting, Fabrication, Insulating, and Welding. A strong foundation in technical knowledge, field coordination, and construction sequencing is essential. The Mechanical Superintendent must also demonstrate excellent communication skills to lead teams effectively, interface with project managers and trades, and ensure seamless execution on the jobsite. In addition to mechanical expertise, this role is responsible for enforcing all Safety and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) activities to ensure that all installations meet or exceed company standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.
Responsibilities
- Able to operate and/or train employees in the use of heavy equipment including but not limited to: forklifts, telehandlers, and aerial lifts.
- Collaborate with other construction professionals, such as architects and contractors, to ensure efficient project execution and resolve any construction issues or modifications.
- Enforce and implement project-specific QA/QC procedures, including inspections, testing, and documentation.
- Estimating material needs for projects and ensuring efficient use of resources.
- Facilitate project closeout duties, system commissioning, and customer training.
- Follow all site safety protocols, guidelines, and OSHA regulations, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (hard hats, gloves, steel-toe boots, etc.).
- Following instructions from construction project managers, supervisors, and management staff.
- Forecast manpower needs and coordinate crew assignments based on project timelines and resource availability.
- Handle employee performance concerns in coordination with HR and project management.
- Help set up safety lines, nets and other fall protection systems.
- Identify installation issues early and work with field staff and design teams to develop corrective action plans.
- Loading and unloading building materials, as needed.
- Maintain and care for tools, equipment, and materials, ensuring their proper functionality and organization.
- Must be able to use logical step-by-step procedures in working with different materials using a variety of skills.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, and safety reviews as required.
- Perform material take-offs, schedule material deliveries, verify accuracy of received materials, and ensure proper storage and use on site.
- Provide on-site training and mentorship for apprentices and junior staff.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and construction plans to determine the scope of work and required materials.
- Removing hazardous materials and debris from the work site, as needed.
- Supervise and coordinate daily workload operations across multiple active job sites.
- Support continuous improvement efforts by suggesting process enhancements, tool upgrades, or efficiency improvements.
- Track and report daily progress, labor hours, per diem, equipment usage, and jobsite conditions to the project management team
- Willingly and cooperatively perform tasks and duties as needed by the project by field supervisors, project managers or management staff.
Requirements
- 10+ years’ experience in construction field.
- 5+ years’ experience in superintendent position.
- Ability to operate construction tools and equipment.
- Ability to work at heights higher than 30 feet.
- Ability to work independently and as part of the team.
- Any sum or combination of licenses or certifications in the competency of trade work including but not limited to: Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Rigging, Millwright, and Fabrication.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in engineering, architecture, or construction.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Expert knowledge and familiarity with construction industry standards and regulations.
- Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Knowledge of construction methods, scheduling, cost control, contracts, and project specifications.
- Knowledge of Project Management Software.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations.
- OSHA 30 minimum certification.
- Physical stamina and strength to perform heavy labor tasks.
- Reliable and punctual with strong work ethic.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Working Environment
- Standard shifts are 8 (eight) hours; however, extended hours and weekend availability may be necessary depending on project demands.
- Regularly works on construction sites with exposure to moving equipment, heights, airborne particles, outdoor weather, and electrical hazards.
- Noise levels vary from moderate to high.
