on‑exempt) Position FTE: 100% Salary Band: UC S05 Job Summary The Associate Director of Communications leads external communications and content strategy under the Director for Communication and Media Relations. This role shapes unified messaging across channels, collaborates with cross‑functional teams and external agencies, and maintains a consistent, compelling brand voice aligned with the university’s mission. Minimum Qualifications 5+ years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, or related field Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or English Creative thinker who develops innovative ideas for media relations and communication challenges Experience building relationships with media, community, and internal audiences Strategic thinking, both long and short term Self‑starter with strong problem‑solving, organizational skills, and ability to inspire and direct others Proven ability to shepherd projects from concept to completion, engaging stakeholders throughout Strong written and diplomatic communication skills, with experience working with senior administration Detail‑oriented and capable of managing multiple concurrent projects Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree Experience in higher education Essential Functions and Percent of Time Develops, manages, and implements comprehensive communications strategies (30%) Manages media relations, including pitching, press releases, briefings, and events (30%) Supervises professional staff, freelancers, and partner relationships (25%) Oversees the development of original surveys, reports, and data‑driven brand positioning initiatives (10%) Other duties as assigned (5%) Functional Details Develop and execute cohesive communications and content strategy aligned with university goals. Set the tone and voice for content across all external formats. Ensure consistency in messaging across earned, owned, and social channels. Expand reach through new channels, partnerships, and initiatives. Foster relationships with top‑tier media outlets and expand to new contacts. Organize press events and prepare executive spokespeople. Identify and mitigate potential reputation risks and challenges. Manage a team including an assistant director of communication. Identify stories that resonate with target audiences in partnership with internal teams. Coordinate freelance writers and outside agencies for storytelling and brand awareness efforts.
