Position Summary
The Beaver’s Digest Assistant Editor works in collaboration with the editor-in-chief of Beaver’s Digest and is responsible for student-produced content for the magazine, its website, and social media channels. Students in this role will develop communication, critical thinking, and professionalism skills.
Responsibilities
Assist in curating, pitching, assigning, editing, and reporting stories for Beaver’s Digest (print, online, and social media).
Update and contribute online and social media content at least five days per week with stories, photos, and interactive features.
Provide coaching and feedback to student writers before publishing.
Ensure deadlines are met and manage workflow.
Organize and conduct launch campaigns and events.
Plan and hold weekly meetings to assign tasks and oversee magazine activity.
Support production of print issues and ensure files are ready for the commercial printer by deadline.
Assist the EIC in hiring, supervising, and managing a team of writers.
Other duties as assigned by the editor.
Communication
Respond to emails, messages, team chats, and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN.
Use project management platforms (e.g., Basecamp, Discord) and respond promptly.
Work 10 regular in‑office hours each week, with at least half during 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday‑Friday.
Notify adviser immediately of any ethical, legal, personnel, or controversial issues.
Leadership & Eligibility
Follow all OMN policies and procedures; act professionally at all times.
Ensure inclusive representation in designs and content.
Must be academically enrolled and maintain good standing (no suspension).
Meet minimum enrollment standards based on program (high school, undergrad, graduate, international).
Additional Required Qualifications
Knowledgeable in newsgathering, news values, and fact‑checking.
Willing to learn AP Style and follow the SPJ Code of Ethics.
Flexible to work nights, weekends, and academic breaks.
Willing to learn page‑design software.
Organized, reliable, strong writer and communicator.
Comfortable with public speaking and providing feedback.
Professional and calm when working with challenging individuals.
Experienced in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships.
Served as paid OMN staff for at least 6 months or volunteer for at least 12 months.
Complete all On‑Boarding Curriculum before beginning the role.
Preferred Qualifications
Paid member of OMN staff for at least one term.
Prior attendance and participation in OMN Training Camp.
Compensation
10 hours per week, $652 per month. Minimum hourly rate $15.05 (Standard); $14.05 (Non‑Urban); $16.30 (Portland Metro). Maximum hourly rates $21.50, $21.00, $22.00 respectively.
