Position Summary

Responsible for the ongoing operation, development, direction, supervision, and administration of the UNM Children's Psychiatric Center and the University Psychiatric Center (adult). Reports to and works in conjunction with the ACNO for Behavioral Health to establish goals, objectives, and organizational philosophy consistent with the organization's Clinical Operations Goals. Ensure quality of care, patient satisfaction, staff satisfaction, cost‑effective operations, optimal performance of personnel, and service to the community. Assists the ACNO with the development of strategic and operational plans for the area of responsibility. Support education and research in conjunction with Medical Directors. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Direct activities of the department and/or programs in accordance with Hospitals policies and objectives.
  • Develop efficient organizational structure; supervise employees and select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with medical staff in operations of programs/services.
  • Develop plans and make recommendations regarding organizational and departmental operations such as structure, space and layout, equipment use, workflow, and staffing.
  • Assist ACNO in strategic planning of short- and long-range plans and participate/lead in implementation.
  • Recommend changes for improvement in program content and in short/long-range planning, in conjunction with medical director.
  • Perform continual analysis of staffing, quality assurance, management review, budget reviews and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure staffing is appropriate to patient need.
  • Advise senior management regarding program and project status, progress, and implementation issues.
  • Allocate resources and establish priorities; provide direction for monitoring supply inventory and use.
  • Participate in key decision making regarding overall planning, work redesign, and staff development associated with implementing changes in patient care delivery.
  • Prepare business plans to support new programs and expansion proposals.
  • Present valid, accurate data in a variety of formats for numerous departments and committees.
  • Report and investigate patient complaints as required and recommend solutions.
  • Establish competencies, training sessions, education programs for staff and managers; promote staff satisfaction and recognition activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and rules of accrediting bodies, by monitoring operations.
  • Participate in hospital/medical staff meetings and committees as required.
  • Attend and serve on professional/civic service organizations as a UNM Hospitals representative.
  • Review and update policies and procedures, communicate results verbally and in writing through designated channels.
  • Develop and administer the division's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in‑services, meetings and workshops.

Qualifications

Education

  • Essential: Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Nonessential: Master’s Degree.
  • Essential specialization: BSN with Master’s in Health Related or BS with MSN.
  • Nonessential: Nursing.

Experience

  • Essential: 4 years directly related experience in a Behavioral Health setting.
  • Nonessential: No preferred experience.

Credentials

  • Essential: RN in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Physical: Sedentary work; exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or less frequently for lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving objects.
  • Work conditions: No or minimal hazard, physical risk; office environment; subject to annual contract and performance appraisal; TB testing completed upon hire and as required.
