Overview

Deaf and Blind Pathways Foundation, Inc. (DBPF) is a nonprofit organization transforming from a board- and volunteer-driven model to a board-governed, employee-driven model with volunteer support. The organization aims to broaden its mission, expand its physical plant, and increase the number of people served while collaborating with allied organizations to offer wrap-around services to Deaf and Blind communities.

Position Summary

The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive responsible for all DBPF operations and serves as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors. The ED implements the mission, provides comprehensive leadership to advance the organization’s programs and services, and ensures timely and complete reporting to the Board on fiscal matters, programs, facilities, strategic relationships, and general conditions. The ED reports directly to the Board of Directors and is accountable for organizational performance and information flow to the Board.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizational Management and Oversight: Build and sustain an effective working relationship with the Board; pursue nonprofit management best practices and engage with Board officers in their roles.
  • Staff Leadership: Build, prepare, and lead a competent staff aligned with the DBPF mission; coordinate with key contractors (Bookkeeper, CPA, Gift Administrator, Maintenance Team, School Workers).
  • Strategic Growth: Plan and implement strategic growth in coordination with management and in collaboration with other organizations.
  • Operations Oversight: Direct daily operations, ensure timely execution of processes, initiatives, plans, and related licensures or legal requirements.
  • Committee Engagement: Work with Standing Committees on Education initiatives and Housing operations; engage volunteers as needed.
  • Governance and Volunteers: Establish and sustain committees and ensure meaningful volunteer involvement.
  • Policies and Procedures: Develop, maintain, and implement policies with Board approval.
  • Human Resources: Cooperate with the Board on HR planning and functions.
  • Facilities and Safety: Ensure property maintenance and compliance with regulations; oversee Safety for people served, staff, volunteers, and visitors; manage the Maintenance Team.
  • Advocacy: Advocate for those served by DBPF.
  • Other duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Board.
  • Quality and Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant laws, safety standards, and licensing requirements.

Fiscal Management

  • Budgeting and Reporting: Collaborate with the Board to develop an annual operating budget and present timely reports.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage budgets and budget activity with Board oversight.
  • Contracts and Agreements: Manage all contracts and related actions.
  • Financial Statements and Compliance: Ensure timely preparation of monthly financial statements, tax returns, and audits/reviews; distribute financial documents as directed.
  • Regulatory and Reporting Requirements: Ensure transparency and accountability to government entities, funders, the Board, and other stakeholders.

Public Relations and Resource Development

  • Community Awareness: Maintain knowledge of local and regional developments; inform the Board as needed and take appropriate actions.
  • Marketing and Budgeting: Develop and implement marketing strategies as needed and budget accordingly.
  • Representation: Serve as the organization’s spokesperson and advocate; participate in relevant professional organizations.
  • Donor and Partner Relations: Develop and maintain relationships with board-selected donors, allied agencies, and funders.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise DBPF Management and conduct annual evaluations as staff are hired.
  • Indirectly supervise all DBPF volunteers.
  • Adhere to DBPF policies and applicable laws in supervisory duties.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree (preferably in management or business) or current Certification in Nonprofit Management.
  • Minimum 2 years executive management experience in a mission-driven nonprofit (or for-profit) entity.
  • ASL fluency and minimum 3 years in direct service of the Deaf culture; experience with interpreters preferred.
  • Experience supervising employees with a focus on accountability and professional development for a staff of at least 3.
  • Effective financial stewardship with experience managing an operating budget of at least $500,000.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors, standing committees, and volunteers.
  • Compassion and concern for Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and Hard-of-Hearing communities.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Ability to work long hours with some flexibility; continuous standing, walking, and sitting; occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs; continuous communication; frequent typing and writing; ability to lift up to 10 pounds; hand and finger dexterity; vision requirements; occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
