Aquatics and Program Director

Wheeler Summer Camp’s goal is simple and clear; we are all about giving campers an opportunity to be active in an outdoor environment, explore new things, have fun, build confidence and character, while making long-lasting friendships. Our Summer Camp programs, for children ages 3 to 15, feature a busy day full of fun camp activities for campers grouped by age and/or specialty. Swim lessons and free swim are a fundamental part of our summer programming and help campers build lifelong skills in and out of the water.

Wheeler Summer Camp is seeking an energetic and experienced Aquatics and Program Director to lead all summer aquatics operations. This role is ideal for someone who loves working with children, building strong teams, and creating a safe and engaging aquatics program. The Aquatics and Program Director will oversee daily aquatics operations, supervise and support aquatics staff, and lead swim programming that helps campers develop confidence, water safety skills, and a lifelong love of swimming.

Wheeler Farm features a brand-new aquatics facility that includes an 8-lane lap pool, a training pool ideal for swim lessons and younger swimmers, and an all-season dome that allows the pools to operate outdoors during the summer months and indoors year-round. This is a unique opportunity to lead aquatics programming in a brand-new facility while building a strong aquatics team and supporting meaningful camp experiences for campers and families.

Aquatics Director Responsibilities

• Oversee daily aquatics operations, ensuring a safe, organized and well-managed pool facility.
• Design and oversee the camp swim program, including swim lessons, free swim, and special aquatics activities
• Communicate with families regarding swim levels, camper progress, aquatics updates, and any incidents or concerns, helping build trust and confidence in the aquatics program.
• Develop, review, and enforce all camp policies and procedures, including emergency and aquatics protocols
• Ensure swim instruction is age-appropriate, skill-based, and promotes water safety and confidence, including camper swim evaluations and level placement
• Support an inclusive, encouraging, and skill-building aquatics environment
• Supervise, support, and evaluate lifeguards and swim instructors by providing ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance support through regular staff meetings and trainings
• Ensure all aquatics staff maintain required certifications and professional standards
• Ensure the safety of all campers and staff in and around the pool through strong supervision systems and risk awareness
• Oversee implementation of active lifeguarding, regular head counts, and safe swim procedures
• Lead emergency response at the waterfront and ensure all staff are trained and prepared to act
• Maintain required safety ratios ensure the pool is staffed with certified lifeguards and/or water safety instructors for all swim lessons, free swim, and aquatics programming.
• Create and maintain waterfront staffing assignments and adapt positively to schedule, staffing, or program changes
• Communicate regularly with Camp Administration regarding aquatics operations, needs and concerns through regular communication and in all required camp leadership meetings
• Maintain organization, cleanliness, and proper use of all aquatics equipment and facilities
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or Director of Operation of the Farm

Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old (21+ preferred). Must have current Lifeguard Certification and Water Safety Instructor. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Waterfront or Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred. Previous experience supervising lifeguards and/or teaching swim lessons required. CPO certification preferred but not required. Strong leadership, decision-making, communication, and emergency management skills are essential. Experience working with children in a camp or instructional setting is strongly preferred.

Hours

8:15 AM-4:15 PM Monday through Friday with some exceptions.
