Managers and leads the Plant Department in the accomplishment of their mission to provide an environment that is appropriate and safe for patient care. They are responsible for fiscal constraint and budgetary adherence, corrective and preventive maintenance of all infrastructure systems, construction and implementation support of capital projects, on‑going facilities needs assessments, development of capital project requests, all aspects of energy management, JCAHO Environment of Care compliance, professional development of managerial and technical employees, and quality improvement and reorganization initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as the individual ultimately responsible for the occupational health and safety of all members of the department, overseeing compliance with Hospital policies and coordinating with Facilities Group Core Staff to enhance team performance.
  • Works with employees at all levels to establish a foundation of mutual respect and active participation.
  • Champions actions necessary to achieve high customer satisfaction and support the Hospital’s mission to provide outstanding patient care.
  • Formulates short‑ and long‑range goals, ensures capital budget alignment, enforces the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504, and maintains a high‑quality work environment through ongoing communication, accountability, training, and appropriate maintenance systems.
  • Monitors departmental performance, performs corrective action based on data, approves all performance appraisals, and, with staff assistance, implements programs related to energy management.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, oversees a preventive maintenance program, manages material and service contracts, and tracks energy utilization and cost forecasting.
  • Participates in the Occupational and Facilities Safety Program, supports compliance with Connecticut Fire Safety and Building Codes, and provides safety reports to the EOC committee.
  • Maintains professional relationships with local code enforcement authorities, directs daily operation of the Department, and serves on Hospital standing committees and task forces to support departmental and hospital‑wide objectives.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, applied science, or related field; years of practical experience may substitute for the degree. Training and experience in applying Fire and Building Codes is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Seven (7) to ten (10) years supervising mechanical, electrical, or construction trades, or equivalent experience.
