Job Description
The Content Strategist & Writer is responsible for bringing the YMCA’s mission to life through powerful storytelling and engaging content across digital platforms. This role focuses on content creation, social media, and campaign development, with an emphasis on capturing authentic stories from members, staff, and the community.

This position works closely with marketing leadership and the videographer to create compelling narratives that drive engagement, strengthen brand awareness, and support membership and fundraising goals.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field is required (or equivalent experience).

Three to four (3–4) years of experience in storytelling, writing, and content creation; nonprofit or community‑focused experience preferred

Exceptional writing, storytelling, editing, and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail

Portfolio of relevant work required

Strong understanding of social media platform audience (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok) and best practices for posts, stories, and short‑form video

Demonstrated ability to identify and implement current social media trends in an authentic and brand‑aligned way

Proficiency in Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with social media scheduling tools (e.g., Loomly)

Ability to storyboard, plan, and direct video content

Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment

Strong project management, creative thinking, problem‑solving, and conceptual skills

Self‑starter with creative thinking and the ability to work both independently while collaborating effectively with cross‑functional teams

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and build relationships in the community

Passion for storytelling that reflects diverse experience and fosters a sense of belonging

Team‑oriented with a strong commitment to the YMCA’s mission, community impact, and member experience

Essential Functions

Content Creation & Storytelling

Write compelling, mission‑driven stories for campaigns, website, email, and video

Conduct interviews with members, staff, volunteers, and donors

Regularly visit YMCA branches and programs to capture stories and content

Develop video concepts, scripts, and storyboards in collaboration with videographer

Attend events and programs for on‑site content capture (photo/video)

Capture and produce quick‑turn, high‑quality social content (including iPhone video and event recaps) that highlights YMCA programs, events, and community impact in a timely and engaging way

Edit and package short‑form video content using tools such as Canva or similar platforms for immediate use across social channels

Social Media Strategy & Execution

Create, write, and publish content for all YMCA social media channels aligned with current trends and best practices

Develop creative, engaging social campaigns (including short‑form video/Reels)

Monitor engagement and adjust content strategy accordingly

Campaign Development

Collaborate with marketing team to develop campaign messaging and content plans

Determine best formats for content distribution (video, written, social, etc.)

Ensure content aligns with YMCA brand voice and strategic priorities

Grant & Impact Storytelling

Gather and develop mission‑driven stories from programs, members, and staff for use in grant reporting and funder communications

Translate program impact into clear, compelling narratives that demonstrate measurable outcomes and community benefit

Adapt and refine existing stories to align with grant requirements, funder priorities, and reporting guidelines

Craft funder‑focused content that balances emotional storytelling with outcomes‑driven messaging to strengthen impact and resonance

Collaboration

Partner with branches to identify impactful stories

Work closely with Digital Coordinator to execute campaigns across platforms

Media & Communications

Write press releases and support media outreach efforts

Assist with public relations opportunities that elevate the YMCA’s community presence

Brand & Collaboration

Maintain YMCA brand standards (visually and written) and ensure consistency across all platforms

Ensure consistency in tone, messaging, and storytelling

Collaborate closely with the marketing team, including the Videographer/Editor, to ensure alignment and execution of creative vision

Foster a sense of community through content by promoting inclusivity and participation among all demographics

Organization & Asset Management

Maintain files in an organized and logical manner using the YMCA’s digital asset management system (Bynder)

Ensure content and assets are easily accessible for team collaboration

Additional Expectations

Manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment

Travel to YMCA branches regularly to capture content and stories

Work occasional evenings and weekends for events, program coverage, and time‑sensitive communications

Uphold the mission of the YMCA and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature

Serve as a role model and advocate of the YMCA mission, promise, values, and voice

Foster a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and community engagement

STATUS: Full‑time, Exempt

STARTING SALARY: $60,000
