Job Description AIS is seeking certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists in the Winchester, Virginia area to join our team of independent contractors. These itinerant specialists work in local school divisions to provide quality services to students with visual impairments and blindness. Both part-time and full-time, in-person opportunities are available.
The specialist functions as a member of the student’s educational team, providing comprehensive assessments and related services to school-aged students. Responsibilities include developing and implementing IEPs tailored to visual impairments. Candidates must possess a working knowledge of assessment and instructional practices, evidence-based research, recommended best practices, available technologies for low- and high-tech travel, and the roles and responsibilities of an Orientation and Mobility Specialist within a school environment.
Qualifications
Must hold a Professional Certification and/or licensure in Orientation and Mobility
Preferred experience as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Desired Skills and Experience
Knowledge of special education regulations, policies, and procedures
Experience in writing and implementing IEPs
Experience conducting and documenting assessments and recommendations for Orientation and Mobility
Knowledge of travel skills for students with blindness or low vision
Experience providing consultation and training to teachers and service providers regarding visual impairments
Excellent interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, organizational, and planning skills
Understanding of the characteristics of individuals with various disabilities, especially visual impairments
Ability to recognize and adapt to individual student differences
Ability to collaborate effectively with parents, colleagues, school staff, and service providers
