Summary
The Newport Hospital Director of Quality and Safety reports to the Brown University Health Vice President and Chief of Quality & Safety, with a dotted line engagement to the hospital CMO/CNO. The role develops, directs, coordinates, and evaluates comprehensive care transformation activities to improve core measure performance, conduct physician peer review and professional practice evaluation processes, investigate patient safety events, and implement corrective actions to enhance the culture of safety. The director oversees the development and implementation of hospital quality, patient safety, patient experience, and performance improvement programs, and leads both hospital and Brown University Health leadership in building educational and improvement initiatives using rapid-cycle improvement techniques, monitoring performance metrics, and supporting compliance and accreditation efforts. The position also fosters customer service and patient experience initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Human Experience, aligning all core quality functions with Brown University Health’s strategy for operational excellence. Strategic leadership and oversight are provided for quality metrics and their associated processes to achieve optimal outcomes and compliance with evidence‑based care.
Responsibilities
- Lead a highly skilled team of quality and patient experience specialists.
- Oversee selected quality issues, guiding staff to investigate critical events and develop corrective actions.
- Assist with clinical root cause/Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) projects and facilitate development of corrective plans.
- Provide feedback reports to staff and leadership on investigations and improvement activities.
- Support development of regulatory and accreditation reports (Department of Health, Joint Commission, etc.).
- Interface within the Care Transformation, Quality and Safety department and other quality initiatives across Brown University Health.
- Direct the effective utilization of resources (people, financial, material, equipment) to meet goals.
- Establish departmental priorities aligned with organizational priorities and strategies.
- Oversee document peer‑review activity and facilitate medical staff and system performance improvement initiatives.
- Serve as liaison to medical staff departments for coordination of quality improvement actions involving patient‑care and physician procedures.
- Promote meaningful communication and performance‑improvement information among stakeholders.
- Lead site and/or system‑wide improvement teams using performance improvement methodologies.
- Manage clinical and patient‑safety data needs; lead teams toward successful improvement strategies.
- Monitor overall performance metrics and communicate with internal and external customers.
- Achieve improved performance in core measures and reported metrics.
- Collaborate with leaders to develop, measure, analyze, and implement process‑improvement initiatives, using scalable quality strategies.
- Identify data‑driven solutions for improvement and support a culture of employee engagement to improve patient outcomes.
- Develop customer‑service training for onboarding, ongoing training, and just‑in‑time curriculum for new initiatives.
- Work with leadership to establish a robust patient‑experience program incorporating patient‑centric best‑practice models.
- Assist the Vice President of Quality and Safety in planning activities for hospital‑wide and system‑wide improvement efforts.
- Facilitate flow of information to appropriate committees and representatives.
- Assess and resolve family/visitor issues as needed.
- Act as an expert resource on patient relationship development and quality‑outcome measurement.
- Coach staff leading improvement teams and identify best practices to integrate into existing systems.
- Serve as a role model for Brown University Health’s shared values and uphold the Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a related healthcare discipline (required).
- Master’s degree in a related healthcare field (required).
- Six Sigma Black Belt certification or equivalent experience (preferred).
- CPHQ, CPPS, or other quality certifications (preferred).
Experience
- Minimum seven (7) years of related experience, especially in quality measurement, reporting systems, physician peer‑review oversight, and process evaluation and improvement.
- Extensive knowledge of performance‑improvement systems and standards.
- Effective project‑management skills and experience with electronic health record systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, database development, and outcomes management tools.
- Strong facilitation, presentation, critical‑thinking, and analytical skills.
- Ability to collaborate and lead multidisciplinary project teams.
Supervision
Supervisory responsibilities for up to twenty professional and support staff, including selection, direction, and evaluation of work.
Pay Range
$134,035.20–$221,187.20
