What We're Looking For

It’s an exciting time to join our team of employee-owners for this key position in the New York Office! The Group Director – Program and Construction Management is responsible for leading our team of approximately 60 staff performing Program Management, Construction Management, and Resident Engineering & Inspection services. As a key member of the New York Office Leadership Team, the Group Director:

  • Brings a culture of leadership and development; responsible for technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.
  • Drives profitable growth of the Program & Construction Management services.
  • Collaborates with leadership across the office and division to apply the firm’s strategic sales and planning approaches.
  • Leads and supports project pursuits and proposals.
  • Drives 4for4 project delivery and manages project scope, budget, and quality control for large and/or complex projects or programs.
  • Coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments for profitable performance.
  • Oversees departmental and section financial metrics to ensure adherence with the group’s goals and align with office expectations.
  • Ensures clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time.
  • Serves as a bridge between the NY Design office and collocated staff at HNTB’s client-focused/field projects, bringing a connected culture to our staff and ensuring career and development is seamless regardless of an employee’s reporting location.

What You’ll Do

  • Direct and supervise the development, monitoring, and management of operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordinate with the office’s budget.
  • Oversee group activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to projects. Collaborate with other groups, offices, and divisions on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
  • Drive implementation of the firm’s strategic plan and HNTB’s Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including development of strategic planning strategies.
  • Drive implementation of the firm’s contracting approach (SCA) through project delivery and contracting activities, including scope, work plan, and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.
  • Drive implementation of the firm’s project delivery approach (SDA) including work planning, monthly project reviews, and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, and to the client’s satisfaction.
  • Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities.
  • Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for departmental growth.
  • Assist in the development and execution of the office strategic plan; may participate on the Office Leadership Team (OLT).
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.
  • Actively manage assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget, and quality management) and perform technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications, and plan preparation.
  • Lead a group including direct and indirect supervision of at least 25 but typically 35–40 or more employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field and 12 years of relevant experience, or
  • In lieu of education, 16 years of relevant experience.

What We Prefer

  • 15 years of practical experience.
  • 6 years of supervisory experience.

The approximate pay range for New York is $180,596.86 – $360,607.36. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
