Mechanical Designer
Actalent, Chandler, AZ, United States
Mechanical Designer – Siemens NX / Teamcenter (Aerospace & Defense)
This role supports a long-term, high-visibility aerospace defense program as a Mechanical Designer, using Siemens NX and Teamcenter to develop detailed 3D models and drawings in a fully digital, paperless environment. You will apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) daily, contribute to the design of mechanical and electro‑mechanical components, and help deliver mission‑critical systems that support launch vehicles and strategic defensive systems.
Responsibilities
Develop layouts and prepare detailed and assembly drawings of moderate complexity for mechanical and electro‑mechanical components using Siemens NX and Teamcenter.
Create, revise, and maintain 3D models and associated drawings in a paperless, Product Manufacturing Information (PMI)-driven environment.
Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) methods daily to ensure proper fit, form, and function of components and assemblies.
Work closely with designers and engineers to translate design concepts and requirements into accurate, manufacturable CAD models and drawings.
Gather and track missing information needed to complete assignments, proactively following up with stakeholders to resolve open items.
Perform work in accordance with standard drafting and configuration management practices, adhering to established policies, standards, and procedures.
Use CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools, including Siemens NX and Teamcenter, in alignment with established drafting standards and vault practices.
Contribute to the design of relatively simple mechanical and electromechanical components under minimal supervision.
Review and revise existing drawings and models to incorporate engineering changes, updated requirements, and improved manufacturability.
Potentially hand off work to and provide guidance or oversight to lower-level drafters, ensuring quality and consistency in deliverables.
Maintain meticulous digital documentation, including dimensions, notes, data sheets, and work instructions within the PMI framework.
Demonstrate proactive work habits by independently determining next steps, identifying issues early, and requesting information when needed rather than waiting for direction.
Essential Skills
5–10 years of mechanical design experience in military, Department of Defense (DoD), or aerospace environments.
Strong proficiency (approximately 8/10) with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, including at least 2 years of recent, hands‑on experience.
Daily, practical use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in recent roles, with a solid understanding of GD&T methods to ensure fit, form, and function.
Hands‑on experience with Unigraphics NX 9.0 and Teamcenter in a production design environment.
Ability to use CAD and PLM software in accordance with formal drafting standards and configuration control practices.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including determining next steps, identifying missing information, and driving tasks to completion.
Experience designing mechanical and/or electromechanical components for aerospace or defense applications.
U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance.
Familiarity with standard drafting practices and policies for mechanical and electro‑mechanical components.
Experience working in environments where accuracy, traceability, and compliance with engineering standards are critical.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
At least 1 year of Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) experience in NX, ideally in a paperless program where PMI captures assembly/work instructions, dimensions, and data sheets within the model.
Previous experience supporting launch systems, missile defense, or similar aerospace and defense programs.
Experience working within a fully digital engineering environment, including model‑based definition and paperless workflows.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality, manufacturable drawings and models.
Proactive communication skills, including the ability to seek clarification, request missing inputs, and collaborate effectively with engineering teams.
Ability to mentor or provide guidance to junior drafters or designers when needed.
Comfort working on long‑term programs with extended periods of performance and evolving requirements.
Work Environment You will contribute to the design and development of mission‑critical systems that support launch missions and defensive systems for government and military customers, including next‑generation interceptor and strategic deterrent programs. Work primarily takes place in an office environment using Siemens NX, Teamcenter, and related digital engineering tools, with occasional work in laboratory or manufacturing areas for testing or design support. The program operates in a paperless, model‑based environment where PMI and digital documentation are central to the workflow. The schedule follows a 9/80 compressed workweek, in which employees work nine‑hour days over two weeks for a total of 80 hours, typically resulting in one additional day off (often a Friday) every other week. This structure offers a three‑day weekend every other week while requiring longer workdays and coordinated staffing. The culture emphasizes high standards of technical rigor, adherence to drafting and configuration practices, and a strong sense of mission supporting national defense and space‑related initiatives.
