The primary purpose of this position is to build underwriting expertise while supporting the Surety Underwriting unit within one of our underwriting headquarters. Working under direct supervision, this individual may be tasked with making decisions independently and could hold limited underwriting authority.
The role involves regular interaction with multiple stakeholders—including operations, home office underwriting, frontline underwriting, agency partners, customers, and contractor services—to help advance Markel Surety's objectives and execute key underwriting strategies. Building underwriting expertise is the core focus of this position, and the individual will actively develop skills through hands‑on involvement in underwriting processes. Additionally, this person may be assigned to lead special projects that support team and organizational objectives.
Responsibilities
Supports underwriting operations by processing and reviewing new and existing business in accordance with established underwriting guidelines.
Collaborates with experienced underwriters and actively develops underwriting expertise through participation in evaluation and decision‑making processes.
Delivers exceptional internal and external customer service while strengthening relationship management skills.
Job Requirements
Four‑year college degree or successful completion of at least two years as an Underwriting Technician.
Proven written and verbal communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to interact and gain buy‑in on complex and sensitive decisions with internal and external customers.
