Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading a field survey crew in the collection of accurate survey data for construction, engineering, and land development projects. This role oversees daily field operations, ensures proper use and maintenance of surveying equipment, and verifies that all field work meets project specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards. The Survey Crew Chief works closely with survey technicians, CAD staff, engineers, and project managers to ensure timely and accurate project delivery.

Position Description
Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading a field survey crew in the collection of accurate survey data for construction, engineering, and land development projects. This role oversees daily field operations, ensures proper use and maintenance of surveying equipment, and verifies that all field work meets project specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards. The Survey Crew Chief works closely with survey technicians, CAD staff, engineers, and project managers to ensure timely and accurate project delivery.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and direct field survey crews in performing boundary, topographic, construction staking, and as-built surveys.
- Interpret project plans, specifications, and legal descriptions to establish accurate survey control.
- Operate and maintain total stations, GPS receivers, data collectors, and other survey instruments.
- Download, review, and submit field data for processing in CAD and GIS systems.
- Perform calculations and make field adjustments to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Communicate with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify scope and resolve issues.
- Ensure all survey activities are conducted safely and in accordance with company safety policies.
- Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and records of survey data.
- Train and mentor junior survey crew members in proper field techniques and equipment use.
Perform routine maintenance and calibration of survey equipment.
Position Requirements
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or technical certificate in surveying or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of survey field experience, with at least 1 year in a leadership role.
- Proficiency in operating total stations, GPS systems, and data collection equipment.
- Understanding of survey principles, coordinate systems, and field-to-finish processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, plans, and legal descriptions.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods and traverse uneven terrain.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of survey equipment.
