
Marketing and Communications Intern

The Community Foundation of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Region is seeking a motivated individual to support marketing and communications efforts that highlight community impact, donor stories, and nonprofit partnerships. This position offers hands‑on experience in nonprofit communications and storytelling while contributing to meaningful work across the region.
REPORTS TO President & CEO, Community Foundation’s Community Engagement Committee Chair
LOCATION Grand Forks, ND
SUMMARY The Marketing & Communications Intern supports the Community Foundation’s efforts to share stories of community impact, strengthen relationships with donors and nonprofits, and increase visibility for the Foundation’s work.
Working closely with Community Foundation staff, the intern will assist with implementing the Foundation’s marketing plan, including social media content, newsletters, event communications, and storytelling that highlights grants, donors, and nonprofit partners. The intern will help ensure communications remain consistent, engaging, and aligned with the Foundation’s mission of connecting people who care with causes that matter.
This role provides hands‑on experience in nonprofit marketing, storytelling, and community engagement.
EXPECTATIONS
This is a part‑time, seasonal position (June – December) averaging approximately 4-6 hours per week, with occasional additional hours during events or major communications periods.
Represent the Community Foundation with professionalism, enthusiasm, and respect for donors, nonprofits, and community partners.
Maintain clear communication with Community Foundation staff regarding progress and deadlines.
Take initiative in organizing content, identifying stories, and maintaining a consistent communications schedule.
Stay organized while managing multiple small projects and timelines.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Social Media Content
Draft and schedule social media posts that align with the Foundation’s monthly marketing themes.
Assist with the creation of two original social media posts per week and identify relevant posts from community partners to reshare.
Develop posts highlighting:
Community impact and grantmaking
Donor and fund stories
Nonprofit partners
Giving opportunities and stewardship messages
Capture photos or gather visual content from events and partner organizations when possible.
Newsletter Support
Assist in preparing the monthly Foundation newsletter, including:
Drafting short impact stories
Gathering quotes or highlights from grant recipients
Organizing announcements or upcoming opportunities
Help ensure newsletter content is clear, concise, and engaging.
Storytelling & Content Development
Research and draft short stories highlighting:
Grant recipients
Community partnerships
Donor and fundholder impact
Assist with gathering photos, quotes, and basic information from nonprofit partners.
Event Communications
Support communications for key Community Foundation events, including:
Trusted Advisor Seminar
Gratitude Gathering
Grant announcements and program updates
Responsibilities may include:
Creating social media posts before and after events
Capturing photos and highlights
Assisting with post‑event recap content.
Website & Content Organization
Assist with uploading newsletters, press releases, or event recaps to the website as needed.
Help organize marketing assets, photos, and content files.
Marketing Calendar Support
Help track upcoming communications aligned with the annual marketing calendar.
Assist in preparing materials tied to key annual moments such as:
Annual Report highlights
Grant announcements
Annual Appeal messaging
Year‑end gratitude communications
QUALIFICATIONS
Commitment to the Foundation’s mission and values.
Strict adherence to confidentiality requirements regarding all client and personnel information.
Preferred candidates may be undergraduate or graduate students studying marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or related fields.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
Strong writing and storytelling skills
Attention to detail and organization
Interest in nonprofit or community impact work
Comfort with social media platforms
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Experience with Canva, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, mass email platforms, and social media scheduling tools are preferred.
Access to adequate and reliable technology (internet, phone, computer, etc).
COMPENSATION This position provides a monthly stipend of $500 for the duration of the internship (June-December). The stipend reflects an estimated time commitment of approximately 4-6 hours per week supporting the Community Foundation’s marketing and communications activities.
