Job Description


Join a world‑class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Director of Ambulatory Operations , responsible for overseeing the operations of ambulatory surgery services including ENT, plastic surgery, audiology, urology, ophthalmology, speech language pathology, and general surgery. The Director participates in long‑range strategic planning and short‑range implementation to ensure sites are managed in a consistent manner that embraces the Practice Plan’s patient‑centered service and service excellence standards and utilizes efficient operational processes. In addition to providing operational oversight, this individual will be a key collaborator with the relevant departments and a thought leader in ambulatory quality and safety, coordination of care across the continuum, use of technological tools and solutions, metrics reporting, customer service, and process improvement. Through the supervision of a group of Practice Managers and in collaboration with department/section medical and administrative leaders, the Director will be primarily responsible for overseeing the operations of a group of ambulatory physician practices located at the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM) on the Hyde Park campus in Chicago, IL.


Who You Are



  • Master’s degree in a healthcare‑related field such as Nursing, Healthcare Administration or MBA is preferred.

  • 5+ years of progressive experience overseeing an ambulatory practice framework.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with physician leaders, preferably in an academic medical center environment.

  • Exceptional talent in the selection and mentoring of a high‑quality, effective management team.

  • Proven ability to lead change, organize teams, and delegate responsibility appropriately.

  • Proven ability to use data to drive performance improvement.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience using LEAN for performance improvement is desirable.


What you’ll do as the Director of Ambulatory Operations



  • Lead, develop, and motivate a management team which collaborates with department and section administration to achieve cost, quality, service, and financial outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively with departmental/sectional leadership to optimize patient care capacity and patient access.

  • Work collaboratively with revenue cycle and departmental personnel to optimize clinic financial performance.

  • Responsible for metric analysis and, in collaboration with clinical leadership of the practices, direction setting.

  • Improve patient satisfaction levels and strengthen physician relations.

  • Assure performance improvement, risk management, and patient safety functions are developed, evaluated, maintained, and integrated throughout areas of responsibility.

  • Ensure UCM organizational initiatives are carried out.

  • Lead operational process improvement efforts.

  • Collaborate with executive leadership (Chairs/Chiefs/Medical Directors, Executive Assistants and VP of Ambulatory) to develop and implement strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Assistants/Section Chairs and Chiefs/Medical Directors to develop and monitor the operating and capital budget for each practice.

  • Ensure lines of communication are developed and maintained with UCM and BSD leaders.
