Position Overview

Hours: Full-Time – 35 Hours. Work Location: 30-30 Thomson Avenue, LIC, NY 11101.

The NYC Department of Design and Construction, Public Buildings Division, seeks a Deputy Director. The selected candidate will supervise a team of project directors and project managers, oversee the design and construction of capital projects, resolve project issues, and ensure projects meet critical target dates and remain within budget.

Responsibilities also include upholding Public Buildings’ policies and procedures, interfacing with sponsor agencies, facilitating approvals and permitting, preparing consultant and contractor performance evaluations, and assisting the Assistant Commissioner and Program Director in developing the Unit’s Commitment Plan and meeting KPIs.

Eligibility

Only candidates who are permanent in the Administrative Construction Project Manager title or who are reachable on the DDC promotional list (exam #3523) or the open‑competitive list (exam #3039) may apply.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work full‑time in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least six years of full‑time, satisfactory experience in construction management of capital projects with a dollar value of at least $15,000 each.
  • At least eighteen months in a managerial or consultative capacity in an organization responsible for construction management.
  • Remaining ten years of education and experience may be satisfied through: (i) full‑time satisfactory experience in construction inspection on capital projects (up to 4 years credited at 1 year per 1 year); (ii) full‑time satisfactory experience as a journeyperson in skilled building construction trades (up to 4 years credited at 1 year per 1 year); (iii) earning a bachelor’s degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or engineering disciplines (up to 4 years credited at 1 year per 30 credits).
  • A New York State professional engineer or registered architect license, or an equivalent license from a reciprocal state, can substitute the four years of education and experience.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of design principles with the ability to implement design into construction, broad familiarity with management policies and practices used to control complex technical operations, effective verbal and written communication, and at least six years of managerial, administrative, or supervisory experience.

License Requirements

Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License, maintained throughout employment.
