Director of Reactor Operations / Advanced Nuclear Systems / Abilene, Texas
This position is for an organization operating a licensed nuclear facility in Abilene, TX and is an on-site role. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in nuclear reactor operations, regulatory compliance, and facility leadership within a highly regulated technical environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide executive-level oversight of day-to-day reactor operations, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant facility performance.
- Maintain authority over reactor safety, operating limits, and technical specifications.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state nuclear regulations, licensing requirements, and reporting obligations.
- Lead and supervise reactor operators, engineers, technicians, and research staff.
- Plan and execute reactor experiments, irradiations, and test campaigns in support of internal and external research programs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain operating procedures, emergency preparedness plans, maintenance programs, and configuration control systems.
- Serve as the primary technical interface with regulators, inspectors, auditors, and external partners.
- Drive long-term operational strategy, including facility upgrades, new capabilities, and lifecycle planning.
- Manage reactor operations budgets, schedules, and vendor relationships.
- Foster a strong nuclear safety culture and continuous improvement across all operational activities.
Experience Required
- 8+ years of experience in nuclear reactor operations, nuclear facility management, or a closely related field.
- Prior experience at a research, test, or demonstration reactor.
- Direct experience supporting regulatory inspections, audits, and licensing actions.
- Proven leadership experience managing multidisciplinary technical teams in a regulated environment.
- Demonstrated ability to balance operational reliability, safety, and research or mission-driven objectives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline (advanced degree preferred).
- Strong leadership, judgment, and risk‑management capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail‑oriented, process‑driven approach to operations and compliance.
- Ability to operate effectively in a mission‑driven research environment.
