
Director, State & Local Tax- Indirect Tax

Position Summary
Baker Tilly is offering a Director role in its growing State & Local Tax (SALT) practice located in Chicago. The position focuses on indirect tax engagements and is part of a team that provides a full spectrum of state and local tax services.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted advisor to middle‑market and Fortune 500 clients by delivering strategic state and local tax consulting that lowers tax rates, ensures compliance and adds value.
- Manage multidisciplinary, multi‑state reviews to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits, incentives and tax‑efficient corporate structures.
- Research state tax issues such as nexus determinations, taxability analyses and quantification of potential liabilities.
- Counsel clients on state and local tax controversies, draft correspondence, prepare ruling requests and provide guidance for audit defense.
- Plan and execute tax projects, including due diligence and voluntary disclosure initiatives.
- Prepare technical memoranda on state and local tax issues for various entity types.
- Maintain active client communication, recommend business and process improvements, manage expectations and enhance value.
- Assist with managing client engagement staffing, billings/collections, and ensuring client profitability targets are met.
- Utilize entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally, with clients and the community.
- Invest in personal professional development and participate in firm‑wide learning and development programs.
- Support the growth and development of team members through coaching and mentoring.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; Master’s in Taxation or LLM preferred.
- CPA and/or JD certification required.
- 10+ years of experience in state and local tax.
- 5+ years of supervisory experience, mentoring and counseling associates desired.
- Experience as a client‑serving professional for a consulting firm desired.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise, deliver exceptional client service, stay current on tax strategies, maintain ethical standards, and exhibit a sense of urgency and commitment to quality.
Compensation
In Chicago and Oakbrook, IL: pay rate range is $257,140 to $337,490. Compensation is influenced by factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, degrees, certifications, work arrangements and geographic location. Baker Tilly offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package to eligible employees.
