Gray Media owns and operates television stations and digital properties across Florida, all powered by tight-knit teams of passionate journalists in well-established newsrooms. This Bureau Chief/MMJ will serve on all of those teams, generating multiple planned stories daily, and pivoting into breaking coverage as the news day evolves.
Job Summary/Description: Gray Media Group is recruiting an experienced and competitive Bureau Chief/MMJ who thrives covering politics and statewide issues in the capital of the third-largest state in the country, with a Governor who continually generates national news. The position is based in Tallahassee, Florida, and is a unique opportunity to become the face of Florida Political Coverage for multiple markets on digital and broadcast platforms.
This Bureau Chief must be equally comfortable maintaining an editorial calendar as s/he is with developing sources, and seeing the possible when challenges arise. S/He will strive to be a best practices MMJ/Reporter, enthusiastically balancing people-driven visual storytelling, with adlibbed live shots, talkbacks, and debriefs. S/He will also help produce small-bite content delivered by teammates at the station level. This teammate is considered a newsroom leader, seeking and implementing feedback from stations to up his/her game given an ever-changing media landscape.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Generating content and maintaining a weekly coverage calendar that Florida stations will access
Building contacts and maintaining a network of strong, reliable sources
Demonstrated knowledge of covering complex government and politics stories with accuracy and balance
Organizing coverage plans with the photographer/producer and dividing up duties as necessary
Compelling live reporting, including daily coverage during legislative sessions, breaking news, and enterprise stories
Producing streaming content that will serve digital platforms
Coordinating live shots for Gray affiliates in multiple Florida markets
Qualifications/Requirements:
3+ years as an MMJ or reporter in a television newsroom; state house experience in a capital city preferred
Substantial knowledge of politics and government issues, and a passion for reporting on these topics
A demonstrated track record of engaging, "happening now" live shots, scripted and unscripted coverage
Good news judgment and journalistic integrity
BS/BA in journalism or communications
A valid driver's license and good driving record
Experience with live equipment such as TVU and LiveU
