CNA’s Commercial Middle Markets team provides standard lines commercial property and casualty insurance products such as General Liability, Property, Inland Marine, Commercial Auto, Workers' Compensation, and Umbrella to businesses of all sizes. Our Middle Markets team underwrites a diverse mix of business and industry classes including Manufacturing, Professional Services, Financial Institutions, Real‑estate, Distributors, Technology, Wholesale, and Retail. Typical account sizes range from $75,000 up to $2,000,000 and over in premium on a multi‑line basis.

As determined by CNA and depending on the applicant’s experience and/or qualifications, candidates may be hired into one of three Underwriter positions: Underwriter, Underwriting Specialist or Underwriting Consultant. Typically starting at 3+ years of related experience.

Responsibilities

Underwriting Expertise: Review applications and financial requirements to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with CNA’s guidelines and standards; understand pricing components and rating methodology, use predictive modeling tools, and price risk based on financial and competitive analysis.

Use all appropriate underwriting tools (e.g., RST, BPMT, Merlin) and expertise to ensure guidelines are followed, provide thorough account reviews, document files, and analyze adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, and underwriting requirements.

Adhere to CAT guidelines and underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and appropriately price; keep current on state/territory issues, regulations and trends.

Portfolio Management: Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business and portfolio management goals; prioritize time and resources to optimize producer performance; operate with an Enterprise perspective to identify cross‑sell opportunities.

Sales & Distribution Management: Build and maintain rigorous sales practices using all CNA systems; develop producer relationships to build pipeline and drive performance; implement distributor specific plans, monitor performance, and adjust plans to secure substantial pipeline for future profit growth.

Proactively identify cross‑sell opportunities and partner with other underwriters to deliver comprehensive insurance solutions for customers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of underwriting processes, coverages, and tools to gather and evaluate information for renewals and new business.

Ability to uncover customer needs, position specific solutions, handle objections and close deals.

Sound judgment, negotiation and decision‑making based on authority level.

Strong problem‑solving, rapid learning, adaptability, influence, and ability to prioritize multiple concurrent projects.

Compensation and Benefits In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In the District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $72,000 to $141,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
