Position Overview
The Contract Grant Writer will support Sokana Collective by leading grant research efforts, completing select grant applications, and supporting grant tracking and reporting for leadership and board visibility.
This role balances strategic research, internal coordination, writing, and data management, helping ensure the organization maintains a strong and sustainable funding pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Research (Primary Focus)
Identify and maintain a running list of grant opportunities, prioritizing unrestricted or general operating funding.
Research local, regional, and national funders aligned with Sokana’s mission.
Provide brief summaries of each opportunity, including:
Funding focus and alignment
Eligibility
Deadlines and timeline
Level of effort required
Recommend high-priority and time-sensitive opportunities.
Grant Writing & Submission
Draft and submit grant applications upon approval from leadership.
Tailor proposals to align with funder priorities while maintaining Sokana’s voice.
Ensure timely submission of all required materials.
Track submissions and maintain organized records.
Reporting & Data Collection
Maintain accurate records of grants researched, pursued, submitted, and awarded.
Maintain records of funding amounts and timelines.
Support creation of grant reports and summaries for leadership and board meetings.
Provide clear updates on pipeline status, upcoming deadlines, and outcomes.
Help organize data in a way that supports financial tracking and strategic planning.
Internal Communication & Collaboration
Participate in regular check-ins and provide brief updates on new opportunities identified.
Provide updates on upcoming deadlines and support needed from the team.
Collaborate with leadership to confirm capacity and priorities before writing applications.
Compensation
$25/hour for grant research and related tasks.
$150 flat rate per completed grant application (writing + submission).
Qualifications
Experience with grant research and grant writing.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to track, manage, and report data clearly.
Ability to synthesize information into concise summaries.
Strong written communication skills.Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Preferred: Experience working with nonprofits, especially in maternal health, reproductive justice, or community-based services.
Preferred: Familiarity with unrestricted funding strategies.
