Responsibilities

To implement rules, regulations, and policies of the principal, school board, and Virginia High School League (VHSL).

To attend and supervise home athletic contests and competitions.

To attend and supervise away athletic events as assigned by the principal.

To keep the principal informed on the business of athletics.

To keep the overall athletic program fiscally sound and in the black.

To negotiate written athletic contracts with all participating schools.

To ensure eligibility of players and cheerleaders (written parent permission, academic eligibility, medical exams, and maintaining files).

To prepare and exchange eligibility lists with competing schools.

To recommend coaching personnel to the principal and join the principal to evaluate head coaches.

To ensure that fields and courts are prepared for competition.

To supervise all athletic facilities and recommend maintenance and repairs.

To ensure spectator accommodations are prepared.

To meet with coaches each semester to keep them informed of matters pertaining to the athletic program.

To engage and pay police officers as needed.

To interpret and enforce all athletic regulations as specified by the school, district, region, and state.

To schedule bus transportation for high school athletic trips.

To arrange lodging and expenses for away contests as necessary.

To collect payments from other teams in accordance with contracts.

To supervise the purchase, care, repair, storage, issuance, and inventory of equipment.

To assist the principal in the issuance of complimentary passes for the school.

To make arrangements for all non‑school facilities needed in the athletic program (golf courses, tennis courts, cross country courses, etc.).

To follow school board policies, laws, and regulations when purchasing necessary athletic supplies and equipment.

To maintain safety and inventory of tickets and balance tickets with money collected.

To maintain appropriate controls over money collected and make timely deposits.

To arrange proper medical care for injured athletes as needed.

To request or arrange to have a physician and rescue squad present at all home varsity football games and other events as appropriate.

To notify parents and the principal of any severe injuries and follow up regarding cases.

To coordinate with appropriate personnel the schedule for bands, pre‑game ceremonies, and half‑time programs.

To maintain a history of athletic accomplishments.

To prepare certificates of award for all sports and enforce all regulations and requirements.

To act as tournament director of VHSL district, regional, and state athletic events as assigned by the principal.

To coordinate programs with the community and schedule the use of athletic facilities as assigned by the principal.

To work with the principal to schedule school faculty members to act as security personnel or to perform other tasks at selected games.

To provide schedules for middle school and high school to publicize all athletic programs.

To provide officiating organizations with copies of middle school and high school schedules for officiating coverage.

To represent the school at district, regional, and state meetings.

To maintain confidentiality of job‑ and school‑related information.

To perform other related duties as assigned by the principal and/or assistant principal involving the AD assignment.

Preferred: Teach assigned classes, plan and deliver instruction, assess students' progress, and fulfill all professional responsibilities associated with a teaching role.

Preferred: Serve in a teaching role within the school as well, contributing to the academic program through classroom teaching.

Qualifications

21 years of age and possesses a collegiate professional license.

Possesses leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with athletes, coaches, students, school administrators, staff, parents, the community, and other stakeholders.

Demonstrates sufficient knowledge of the business aspects of high school sports to ensure that the athletic program is operated efficiently and in a fiscally responsible manner.

Exhibits the physical ability to effectively perform the various responsibilities of the job.

Demonstrates a willingness to enroll, become a member, or have completed applicable NIAAA & VIAAA professional development classes, certifications, and conferences.

Preferred: Holds appropriate endorsement(s) to teach in an academic subject area and demonstrates the ability to effectively instruct students in a classroom setting.

Has experience as a teacher, administrator, athletic director, or equivalent experience, with accompanying VHSL coaching experience.

Job Requirements

Citizenship, residency or work visa required.

Terms of Employment Athletic Director’s contract/coaching & academic supplements. Supplements are established by the school board. Teaching duties, if assigned, will be based on the 2026-2027 Teacher’s Salary Scale.
