Position Overview
The Marching Band Director is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the Shaw High School Marching Band program. This role includes musical instruction, performance preparation, student leadership development, and coordination of band activities that support school spirit and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Instruction
Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of the marching band program.
Teach instrumental music, marching techniques, and performance skills.
Develop engaging halftime shows and performance routines.
Conduct rehearsals during and outside of the school day (including evenings and weekends).
Student Development
Foster student growth in musical ability, discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
Promote high expectations for student behavior, attendance, and performance.
Support student participation in honor bands, competitions, and enrichment opportunities.
Performance & Events
Coordinate performances at football games, parades, competitions, and school/community events.
Prepare the band for adjudicated events and ensure readiness for public performances.
Maintain a visible and positive presence in the school and community.
Program Management
Manage inventory, maintenance, and care of instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
Oversee band budget, fundraising activities, and purchasing needs.
Collaborate with school administration on scheduling, transportation, and logistics.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with school leadership, athletic department, and fine arts staff.
Communicate regularly with students, families, and boosters.
Engage parents and community members to support the band program.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure adherence to district policies and safety procedures.
Supervise students during all rehearsals, travel, and performances.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field (required).
Valid Ohio teaching license (or ability to obtain).
Experience directing or assisting a marching band program preferred.
Strong knowledge of marching band techniques, music theory, and instrumental instruction.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and manage student groups.
Work Schedule
School-day teaching schedule plus extended hours for rehearsals, performances, and events.
Evening and weekend commitments are required during the marching season.
