Job Highlight Under the overall supervision of the UNOPS Senior Programme Manager, this position is in the United Nations Information and Communications Technology Facility (UNICTF) in Valencia, Spain.
The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Chief, Data Management Unit and direct supervision of ICT Senior Officer – GIS (UNOPS) or designated officer.
The incumbent will be a staff member of UNOPS under its full responsibility.

Job Specific Context The Department of Operational Support (DOS) delivers the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure, systems and software for UN peacekeeping missions and other units. The UN Global Service Center (UNGSC) provides logistics, geospatial, and telecommunications services. The Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) supports field operations with reliable, innovative geospatial, communications and IT services.
Within SGITT, the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) designs and delivers geospatial solutions, with the Data Management Unit (DMU) governing engineering and delivery of geospatial and IoT‑enabled data services across UN operations.
Role Purpose The ICT Associate – Geospatial Data Engineer ensures reliable, timely and quality‑controlled geospatial and IoT data delivery, managing data pipelines, datasets and services for operational systems and decision‑making across UN field missions.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Analysis and Data Engineering
Design, develop and maintain end‑to‑end geo‑enabled IoT data pipelines.
Develop and manage data models, datasets, repositories (data lakes/lakehouses).
Process large‑scale structured, semi‑structured and time‑series IoT data from industrial platforms.
Apply spatial and temporal analysis techniques to detect patterns and operational insights.
Ensure datasets are geo‑referenced, standardised and documented.
Deliver analytics‑ready datasets and data services to support operational systems.
Innovation and Data Integration
Implement and optimise ETL/ELT workflows and data integration pipelines.
Integrate real‑time and near real‑time IoT streams into enterprise geospatial platforms.
Use automation, scripting and best practices to improve performance and maintainability.
Support evolution of modern data architectures (lake, warehouse, lakehouse) in cloud or hybrid environments.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design interoperable data solutions.
Data Quality, Maintenance and Reporting
Implement and enforce data quality frameworks, validation rules and monitoring mechanisms.
Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines for integrity and continuity.
Maintain datasets, databases and services per governance, metadata and security standards.
Produce dashboards, reports and geospatial services from curated data.
Prepare and maintain technical documentation, workflows and SOPs.
Support quality assurance and peer review processes.

Certifications or training in data quality, governance or geospatial technologies.
Experience Requirements Required
Experience in data engineering, pipelines and data platform management.
Designing and maintaining end‑to‑end ETL/ELT pipelines, and working with data lake/warehouse or lakehouse architecture.
Hands‑on with geo‑enabled IoT data, near real‑time or streaming processing, and industrial time‑series platforms.
Proficiency in Python, SQL and data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark).
Desired
Experience with geospatial data engineering, spatial databases and GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Enterprise).
Experience with streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Event Hubs).
Experience with data governance, metadata management and data catalogues.
Familiarity with UN or large‑scale operational environments.
