Field Director – Medical Science Liaison Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicines is recruiting a Field Director – GU Oncology to be based in the North Central Region (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, N. Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota).

Therapeutic Area GU Oncology focuses on prostate and bladder cancer treatments, encompassing a robust marketed portfolio and a near‑term pipeline. The MSL team is highly experienced and integrates patient procedure support with a bladder cancer delivery system.

Position Summary The Field Director leads a regional GU Oncology Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team, providing scientific, clinical, research, and educational support to health‑care professionals and internal partners. The role ensures customer‑centric, insight‑driven, and compliant scientific engagement across the region.

Partner with the MSL Head to translate TA and Medical Affairs strategy into regional priorities, measurable objectives, and execution excellence.

Develop and maintain a strong clinical engagement strategy for each territory, conducting routine strategy reviews with MSL direct reports and leveraging data, insights, AI tools, and performance trends.

Coach and develop MSLs, applying a skills framework, routine feedback, and field observation, focusing on strength‑based coaching, continuous improvement, and career development.

Execute field Medical Affairs programs, including product launches, proactive initiatives, and HCP engagement, ensuring each report possesses scientific acumen, presentation skills, and soft‑skill abilities.

Stay current on scientific information and disease states, guiding the team in collecting and analyzing high‑quality, actionable medical insights.

Serve as a resilient, accountable leader in challenging situations, maintaining professionalism and integrity.

Coordinate closely with Medical Affairs, Scientific Affairs, and cross‑functional partners to align objectives and execution.

Provide oversight of all activities in accordance with regulatory and compliance guidelines, reinforcing ethical decision making.

Regional Team Leadership Responsibilities

Manage a regional GU Oncology MSL team, ensuring alignment to business plans and company directives.

Drive team performance through regular field visits, 1:1s, coaching, and candid, constructive feedback linked to performance expectations and career goals.

Oversee training and development, ensuring ongoing scientific and leadership capability building.

Monitor field activity level and metrics using data dashboards, driving continuous improvement.

Model and develop the team’s scientific exchange skills, addressing objections and inaccuracies.

Ensure each MSL territory plan is strategic, current, and actionable.

Guide the team through special projects and cross‑functional support activities, balancing workload and priorities.

Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse high‑performing team, implementing inclusive leadership strategies.

Plan career and succession pathways, identifying high‑potential talent and readiness.

Create an optimal working environment grounded in Credo values, fostering trust, accountability, and high performance.

Complete administrative duties, including expense reports, metric reports, compliance documentation, and operational reporting.

Co‑lead communication of MSL team achievements, insights, and impact to internal partners and leadership.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Scientific Leadership

Lead compliant, effective cross‑functional collaboration across regions, ensuring communication with field partners.

Participate in business planning across brands within Medical Affairs.

Partner with the MSL Head to develop region/organised provider strategies, providing field insights to inform TA strategy.

Lead scientific projects and programs with strategic design and tactical execution.

Identify and develop field scientific strategies aligned to TA medical priorities.

Represent Field Medical with credibility, influence, and strategic perspective in cross‑functional initiatives.

Champion a culture of excellence by establishing scalable, high‑impact processes that foster alignment and efficiency.

Qualifications

Minimum of a master’s degree; PharmD, PhD, or MD highly preferred.

Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.

Minimum of 4 years in the pharmaceutical industry and a minimum of 2 years of MSL experience; clinical/research experience is preferred.

TA‑related experience preferred.

Previous people‑management responsibility preferred.

Proficiency in data gathering, analysis, clinical expertise, problem solving, interpersonal influence, cross‑functional collaboration, strategic thinking, and competitive landscape analysis.

Valid U.S. driver’s license.

Compensation The anticipated base pay range for this position is $164,000.00 – $282,900.00.
